Stanford men bounce back with volleyball win
|
Brian Cook had 13 kills to help No. 4 Stanford rally to a 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 victory over No. 12 California Baptist in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball action on Monday night in Riverside.
Stanford (7-6, 10-6) struggled in the first set as the Cardinal was limited to a .036 hitting percentage. But Stanford turned the momentum in the second set and finished strong, hitting .565 in the final set.
Freshman James Shaw provided 38 assists for Stanford with Eric Mochalski adding nine kills and .600 hitting as the Cardinal finished with a solid .323 hitting for the match. Steven Irwin had six aces and led the team with 15 points.
The Cardinal rebounded after a five-set loss at No. 2 BYU on Friday and hopes to continue the momentum when it plays host to No. 5 Pepperdine on Saturday and No. 13 USC on Sunday at Maples Pavilion.

Morgan Turner has been hired as the Cardinal's tight ends coach. He replaces Ron Crook, who recently accepted a position in his home state at West Virginia.
Turner enters his third season with the Stanford coaching staff and fourth year overall with the program. Before being elevated, he served as an offensive assistant in 2011 and 2013 after having served prior as a strength and conditioning intern in 2010.
Prior to his arrival at Stanford, Turner spent the 2009 season as the quarterbacks coach at Indiana State, where he worked under head coach Trent Miles and offensive coordinator and former Stanford All-America flanker Troy Walters.
Women's golf
Stanford was tied for second at 10-over-par 298, after the opening round on Monday afternoon at the Cal Classic at the Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton.
"It was really just the first three holes that were rough for us," said Stanford coach Anne Walker. "We made some bad errors on those, but after that we played 15 holes of very solid golf."
Under ideal weather conditions and hard greens, all 11 teams shot over par in the first round with Arizona State in the lead at 296, two strokes ahead of the Cardinal.
Freshman Lauren Kim from Los Altos led Stanford at 1-over-par 73. After three bogeys in the front nine, Kim came back with three birdies and a single bogey to tie for seventh.
"I felt like I was playing in a haze in the front nine," said Kim who birdied the 13th, 16th, and 18th holes. "The putts weren't dropping and I was too relaxed. Then in the back nine, I focused better and was really grinding it out there."
Close behind was Cardinal freshman Mariah Stackhouse, who had four birdies and six bogeys for 74. Stackhouse is tied for 10th in her first outing since shooting an NCAA-record 10-under 61 last Sunday at the Peg Barnard Invitational.
Stanford junior Danielle Frasier went 3-over to tie for 13th while sophomore Mariko Tumangan tied for 17th at 4-over. Sally Watson, a senior, carded a 78 to tie for 28th.— Stanford Athletics Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
