Stanford's Pac-12 hoops status worsens with loss

It may be a little early to start writing Stanford's eulogy for the season. As far as the NCAA tournament goes, though, the Cardinal just fell off the bubble and into the crowded masses yearning for some other postseason berth.

Stanford's NCAA hopes took a big hit these weekend, most recently with UCLA's 88-80 victory Saturday in a Pac-12 Conference men's basketball contest.

The Cardinal (6-7 in the Pac-12, 15-11 overall) solidified its hold on eighth place with a devastating week. Stanford lost to USC on Thursday and has lost three of four overall.

Stanford travels to Oregon State for an 8 p.m. conference game Thursday, to be televised on ESPNU. The Cardinal simply have to win its remaining five games, three on the road, and get help elsewhere to make any significant move in the conference standings.

Dwight Powell recorded 22 points and had eight rebounds, Josh Heustis added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, Aaron Bright scored 19 points and Chasson Randle added 17.

Stanford never led after taking a 19-17 advantage midway through the first half. Bright hit a 3-pointer with 11:25 remaining in the contest to tie things at 58. That, as it turned out, was the final hurrah.
