Despite a complete game from freshman pitcher Kelsey Stevens, the 20th-ranked Stanford softball team fell to Kentucky, 3-1, Sunday on the final day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe.

Stevens allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out a season best 12 batters. The Cardinal (4-2) was limited to a run on four hits.

Sophomore Cassandra Roulund reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second when catcher Jessica Plaza flew out to left field, with the Kentucky outfielder knocking down the fence going after it. Freshman Kaitlin Schaberg singled Roulund home.

The Cardinal threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runners in scoring position and one out, but was unable to capitalize, stranding both runners.

The Cardinal returns to The Farm this week to play Santa Clara on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in its home opener.

The Cardinal hosts the Stanford Invitational Friday through Sunday.

Men's gymnastics
Stanford senior Eddie Penev and was named to the U.S. Men's Gymnastics Senior National Team Saturday night after finishing fourth at the Winter Cup Challenge.

Penev finished the tournament with a combined all-around score of 169.150 and claimed the vault title with a combined score of 30.300. He also had strong routines on floor (14.600), rings (14.100), and parallel bars (14.000).

Penev is now a member of the U.S. Senior National Team through August 2013 when the team competes in the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Hartford, Conn.

He will return to Stanford to complete his senior season and will be back in action when the Cardinal takes on California in the Big Flip Off at Maples Pavilion on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. (PT).

Wrestling
Stanford dropped a 24-13 match to host CSU Bakersfield and fell to 1-4 in the Pac-12 Conference and 6-15 overall.

Stanford junior heavyweight Dan Scherer opened the dual with a 3-2 decision over Sammy Cervantes. Scherer recorded a takedown in the first period, which proved to be the difference in the match. He is now 19-9 overall and 12-7 in duals.

Stanford senior Timmy Boone produced a 4-2 sudden victory over Dalton Kelley at 149 pounds, finally winning with 52 seconds left in the fourth period.

Cardinal junior Bret Baumbach was back in the lineup for the Cardinal at 165 pounds. He shut out David Meza, 12-0, for his fifth major decision win of the year while improving to 15-5 in duals and 20-9 overall.

Redshirt freshman Michael Sojka scored the final points of the dual for Stanford with a 2-0 decision over Frankie Hurtado at 197 pounds.
