Menlo College basketball teams sweep

Bookmark and Share
The Menlo College men's and women's basketball teams will be back home this weekend to host UC Merced following sweeps of CSU Maritime on Saturday in Vallejo. The Menlo women posted an 81-62 triumph while the men won, 67-66.

The California Pacific Conference-leading Menlo women (7-0, 21-3) rolled past the Keelhaulers (2-9, 5-19) with an offensive explosion that featured four players going for 10 or more points. The win was the Oaks' ninth straight overall.

Jolise Limcaco led the offensive charge with a game-high 19 points on a 7-for-13 shooting effort. Jenna Marinaro added 17 points, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Lauren Adamek and Laurel Donnewirth chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Saturday's win capped off another successful week of basketball for Menlo, which included its 73-54 victory of UC Merced on Thursday.

Following their two-week stint on the road, the Oaks will return to the friendly confines of Haynes-Prim Pavilion to finish out their regular-season schedule with three games starting on Saturday against UC Merced at 5:30 p.m.

The Menlo men (3-4, 7-15) were in need of a win in order to rebound from a difficult loss to Pacific Union on Thursday. They had their work cut out for them as they went on the road to take on the Cal Pac-leading Cal Maritime Keelhaulers (5-2, 19-5). Menlo put together one of its most complete games of the year in route to a one-point victory.

Menlo had one of its best shooting efforts on the season, making 47 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free-throw line. Keith Bowman led all scorers with 16 points, including 6-of-7 from the line.

After taking a 28-27 halftime lead, Menlo led by as many as eight points with only five minutes left to play -- the Oaks' largest lead of the game. Cal Martime put together an 11-3 run to tie it with 1:34 remaining.

A big shot by Carlos Monroy shifted the momentum back to Menlo and gave the Oaks a 64-62 lead. The Keelhaulers regained the lead with just 22 seconds remaining. With 12 seconds left, John Smith came through in a big way for the Oaks as he drove to the basket, got his shot to go, and was fouled on the play. With the score tied at 66, Smith nailed the free throw to complete the thre-point play and secure the win.

The win avenged a 58-51 loss to Cal Maritime on the Oaks' floor. Menlo also will play its final three games of the regular season at home -- starting with Saturday's matchup with UC Merced at 7:30 p.m.
