A former Stanford University student faces up to six months in jail for hacking her ex-boyfriend's computer, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.
Erin Nicole Umberg, 29, pleaded no contest on Jan. 25 to one felony and two misdemeanor charges for hacking her ex-boyfriend's computer and email accounts, causing him significant harm, the DA's office said. The district attorney said that Umberg "stalked" her ex-boyfriend on the Internet and in person in 2007. She did not plead guilty or no contest to stalking, however.
Once she got into the victim's laptop, she obtained his email and password account information and that of his friends. She began changing passwords, made embarrassing webpage postings impersonating the victim and his friends, and she canceled his airline tickets, according to Al Serrato of the District Attorney's office.
At one point, Umberg hacked the application of the victim's female friend into a medical residency program and added embarrassing emails that affected her selection for the program, he said.
She will be sentenced on one felony count and one misdemeanor count of disrupting computer services, and one misdemeanor count of altering computer data, on the condition that she will not serve more than six months in jail.
She is the daughter of former state Assemblyman Tom Umberg of Orange County, according to his online biography.
She received her bachelor's degree in human biology and master's in psychology with an emphasis on neuroscience, both from Stanford. She also was enrolled in the molecular physiology and pharmacology doctoral program at Tufts University.
She is currently assistant director at U.C. Irvine at the Newkirk Center for Science and Society in Orange County, according to her online biography.
Umberg is out of jail on her own recognizance. She will return to court for sentencing March 22.Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

Posted by psych, a resident of Stanford, on Jan 28, 2013 at 11:42 am This "masters in psychology" needs a psych exam herself.
Other news reports say that the victim was a Stanford med school student applying for hospital residencies and the perp was trying to sabotage this with her hacking.

I do not think that this part of your article is either germane or appropriate --
>>> "She is the daughter of former state Assemblyman Tom Umberg of Orange County, according to his online biography." <<<
With all due respect, I suggest that it be removed.
Thank you.
