Two road meets in two days equaled two wins for the ninth-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team, the latter of which came Saturday against No. 1 Arizona, 173-115, at the Wildcats' Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

"We took away many positives from today's meet, mostly the great racing in both individual and relay events while showing some very good depth," Stanford coach Ted Knapp said. "Our diving at both meets this weekend was very solid."

David Nolan, Andrew Saeta, Jack Lane and Aaron Wayne got Stanford going with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:27.21).

One race later, Drew Cosgarea (9:20.09) won the 1,000 free with Danny Thomson (9:29.01) and Bryan Offutt (9:31.47) claiming the next two spots.

Thomas Stephens (1:39.08) won the 200 free and Nolan (47.92) kept the winning streak alive in the 100 back.

Arizona got one back in the 100 breast, as Mason Shaw (56.88) led all Cardinal swimmers with a fourth-place showing. Shaw (2:06.96) was also fifth in the 200 breast.

Back came Stanford in the 200 fly, as Mack Montgomery (1:48.55) was joined by Lane (1:49.04) and Tom Kremer (1:49.42) for a 1-2-3 finish.

The Cardinal duplicated the feat in the 50 free with Wayne (20.32), Saeta (20.55) and Jake Hartley (20.95) topping the podium.

Wayne's second straight win came in the 100 free with a 43.58, over one second faster than second-place Giles Smith (44.93) of Arizona.

Matt Thompson (1:46.99) and Matthew Swanston (1:47.93) were the top two finishers in the 200 back.

Cosagrea (4:30.58) was the first of a trio of Cardinal to finish in the top three of the 500 free. Thomson (4:34.60) was second and Offutt (4:34.99) was third.

Lane (48.42) squeezed out a win in the 100 fly and Nolan (1:49.36) led all swimmers in the 200 individual medley.

Wayne, Saeta, Sean Duggan and Stephens clocked a meet-best 2:57.19 in the 400 free relay.

Kristian Ipsen was victorious in the 1-meter (391.28) and 3-meter (426.08) diving events.

Stanford returns to the water when it plays host to USC on Feb. 9.

Women's swimming
Eighth-ranked Stanford pulled off the upset of No. 6 Arizona to complete its weekend Pac-12 Conference women's swimming and diving dual meet sweep.

One day after downing No. 20 Arizona State, the Cardinal stepped up to challenge once again with Saturday's 161-139 win at the Hillenbrand Aquatics Center behind a pair of individual wins by Maya DiRado.

Stanford worked from behind after Arizona notched early wins in the 200 medley relay and 1,000 free.

Andi Murez (1:46.79) got the Cardinal motor running with a win in the 200 free. Stanford then took three of the top five spots in the 100 back, led by Felicia Lee's 54.28.

Sarah Haase (1:02.06) and Katie Olsen (1:02.18) steadied Stanford in the 100 breast by going 2-3 in the race.

Andie Taylor (1:59.69) touched ahead of teammate Kirstie Chen (2:01.90) to keep the momentum going with a 1-2 finish in the 200 fly.

The 50 free featured a first-place finish by Maddy Schaefer in 22.56, who one race later took second by going 49.10 in the 100 free. Murez was third in the event with a 49.71.

DiRado (1:56.26) was first in the 200 back, followed by second-place Annemarie Thayer (1:58.16).

Olsen (2:13.26) rebounded with a win in the 200 breast while Taylor (4:50.60), Allison Brown (4:56.47) and Julia Anderson (5:02.20) controlled the 500 free by finishing 2-3-4.

DiRado (2:00.52) cashed in on the daily double with a win in the 200 individual medley and was joined in the top three by Megan Fischer-Colbrie (2:02.32) and Sarah Haase (2:02.92).

Stephanie Phipps was second in the 1-meter (290.30) and 3-meter (293.25) events.

Stanford put a feather in its (swim) cap when Murez, Lee, Julia Ama and Schaefer won the 400 free relay in 3:18.31.

The Cardinal returns home next weekend for two more league dual meets against UCLA (Feb. 1) and USC (Feb. 2).

Women's water polo
Freshman Anna Yelizarova scored six goals and top-ranked Stanford downed Cal Baptist, 19-1, in its first game of the UCSB Winter Invitational on Saturday.

M-A grad Emily Dorst made the start in goal for Stanford, recording three saves in earning the win.

Melissa Seidemann scored three times to help the Cardinal (3-0) beat UC Irvine, 9-4, in the second game of the day.

Maggie Steffens scored three against the Lancers and twice against the Anteaters. Kate Baldoni had six saves in the second contest.

Stanford meets Cal State Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount on Sunday.

Men's volleyball
Brian Cook had 11 kills to lead No. 4 Stanford to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 victory over No. 10 UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball match at Maples Pavilion on Saturday.

Stanford (6-2 overall, 3-2 MPSF) moved into a tie for second in the conference race by extending its home winning streak to 12. UCSB (3-5, 1-4) has not beaten Stanford at Maples Pavilion since 1988, losing in the building for the 12th consecutive time.

Cook hit .308 and had six digs and four blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Spencer Haly had a career-high eight kills and no errors while hitting .667. Haly also had four blocks.

Stanford next goes on the road to play Hawaii in back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday.

Synchronized swimming
The Stanford synchronized swimming team completed the first weekend of the 2013 season with a victory at Lindenwood University, Saturday, in St. Charles, Mo.

"I was excited to see the team compete this morning in their first routine competition of the season," said head coach Sara Lowe. "We did not compete out full routines at this competition so it was great to see the athletes swim well and finish strong."

Swimming for the Cardinal in the team competition were seniors Madison Crocker, Morgan Fuller, Mariya Koroleva, Michelle Moore and Olivia Morgan, juniors Megan Hansley and Leigh Haldeman and freshman Evelyna Wang. Alternates for Stanford in the event were junior Jessica Guenther and freshman Carolyn Morrice.

In the duet, Hansley and Morgan teamed up to capture first place, while Crocker and Fuller came in second for the Cardinal. Lindenwood's Simona Placha and Carmen Salazar took third.

"Lindenwood is a tough competitor. I hope by seeing them early in the season, it will help our team grow stronger as we work toward Collegiate Nationals," said Lowe.

The next opportunity to see the Cardinal will be on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Avery Aquatics Center on the Stanford campus. The squad will be holding an exhibition swim at 11 a.m. PT and admission is free.

Men's tennis
No. 10 Stanford posted a 4-2 victory over No. 27 Texas Tech on Saturday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium to close out ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

The Cardinal (2-1) bounced back successfully following a 4-0 loss to Texas A&M on Friday afternoon.

Tied at 2-2, Stanford received victories from Nolan Paige at the No. 3 spot and John Morrissey at the No. 1 position to secure the match.

Stanford claimed a hard-fought doubles point, coming away with wins on courts one and three.

After Texas Tech evened the match at 1-1, Maciek Romanowicz pushed Stanford in front 2-1 following a 6-1, 7-5 win over Gabriel Wanderley at No. 4.

The Red Raiders then picked up another point to make it 2-2.

But Paige outlasted Francisco Zambon 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot, shortly before Morrissey hung on for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over Vitor Manzini at No. 1.

Stanford is back in action on Friday, hosting BYU at 1:30 p.m.
