Cardinal men get Buffaloed in Colorado
|
The Stanford men's basketball team has seen better days. The Cardinal swept last year's season series with Colorado, winning both games by 20 or more points.
Not so Thursday night. The Buffaloes dominated the game to the tune of a 75-54 victory and slipped past Stanford in the Pac-12 standings.
Stanford (2-4 in the Pac-12, 11-8 overall) was looking to build some momentum after its win over California last weekend but Colorado never let the Cardinal get into a rhythm.
Stanford hopes to take something away from this road trip when it visits Utah for a conference game Sunday at 6 p.m.
The Buffaloes had their own ideas of grandeur this season after winning the Pac-12 tournament to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament. They won their first six games and made a brief appearance in the national rankings.
The season had not worked out as well for Colorado until its win over the Cardinal gave them back-to-back conference victories. Junior Andre Roberson did a number on Stanford, ripping away 20 rebounds, matching his career best, to go with 11 points.
Stanford had no answer for Roberson and lost the rebounding battle, 45-26. The Cardinal still hasn't found a shooting groove, mustering a .317 percentage from the field. The Buffaloes blistered the nets with a .526 shooting percentage.
Chasson Randle led Stanford with 15 points and Dwight Powell added 11 points as Stanford had its five-game winning streak against Colorado come to an end.
The Cardinal was in trouble early as Stanford's top rebounder, Josh Huestis, was whistled for two fouls in the first three minutes, severely limiting his playing time. He managed six boards, one less than Roscoe Allen's team-leading seven.
Stanford made some noise early in the second half, climbing to within 56-48 before Colorado pulled away. The Cardinal suffered its worst loss of the season. Stanford's first seven losses were by an average margin of 6.1 points, and none more than nine points.— Palo Alto Online Sports Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? Posted by Just an opinion, a resident of the Charleston Gardens neighborhood, on Jan 25, 2013 at 8:53 am I'm sure coach Dawkins is a great guy and role model for his players BUT as a coach he comes up very short in getting his guys to play hard and with passion, very evident in how the kids play, especially on the road. To win on the road you have to play with a chip on your shoulder and with absolute energy and passion!!!
I miss the days of Montgomery where he always got the most out of his players and his kids played very, very hard on the defensive end and played with passion, with that us against the world mentality.
The Stanford of today is just soft, bottom line!!! ***I would be very interested to see how Stanford practices on a daily basis and if everything is done game-like and with a purpose and passion. Practices is where tone and culture of a team is built.
I want to add again, I'm sure Dawkins is a very good man and role model but as a head coach his teams come up way to short in terms of passion and energy and playing hard. I'm sure A.D. at Stanford is beginning to realize this.
It is what it is!

At this point the team has lost about 3 or 4 games they should have won. Making the NIT tournament and missing out on the big dance this year is not acceptable.

Posted by just an opinion , a resident of the Charleston Gardens neighborhood, on Jan 25, 2013 at 11:33 am I have to agree with Stanford Fan. Like I said before, I'm sure Coach D is a great guy, great father etc... but as a DI college coach no passion or energy from his teams.
This is just an opinion but is supported by facts, record of his teams, his body language on bench, passion and energy displayed by his players. He often has good record because of cream puffs he schedules in pre season.
Again, all just an observation but standards are so high now with Football, Baseball, etc at Stanford it is really the TRUTH and JUST HONEST.
With Harboughs passion and energy I'll bet he could get that team playing very hard! A lot of coaching is preparation and motivating and getting kids to go through a wall for you, buying into the system. I just do not see that at Stanford right now in basketball.
