 | Gunn's streak of two-two finishes at invitational tournaments came to an end Saturday at the annual Mid California Wrestling Championships at Gilroy High, where the Titans finished seventh out of 71 teams in the prestigious event.
Gunn had four medalists -- Stephen Martin (4th at 182), Eric Cramer (5th at 126), Sean Lydster (6th at 195) and Harsha Mokkarala (6th at 220) -- while scoring 149.5 points. Turlock won the team title with 310.5 points.
The Titans also finished behind Central Central Coast Section teams Gilroy (tied for third), Riordan (fifth) and Monta Vista (sixth) while earning their second top-10 finish in the event. Gunn finished ahead of five other CCS teams in the top 20.
"We entered some back-ups and did not bring a full team," said Gunn coach Chris Horpel. "Even still, everyone won matches and competed well. I think we are starting to peak at the right time."
Palo Alto, meanwhile, took 32nd in the two-day event. The Vikings entered five wrestlers and had two placers in Gary Hohbach (5th at 160) and Erik Anderson (8th at 182).
"Gary and Erik improve every week," said Paly coach Dave Duran. "Hohbach has been our most consistent wrestler this season.
He is 4-for-4 this year when it comes to tournament placings."
Paly and Gunn will return to SCVAL De Anza Division dual-match action Thursday -- the Vikings at Wilcox and the Titans at Monta Vista. Gunn is 3-0 in duals.
