Stanford wrestlers look to rebound at home after 0-4 trip

 | The Stanford wrestling team completed its East Coast swing Sunday, losing 24-14 to host American at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. The Cardinal falls to 4-10 overall this season, while the Eagles improve to 3-2.
Stanford (4-10) returns to The Farm to host Air Force on Friday at 6 p.m. The Cardinal travel to Corvallis for a Pac-12 dual at Oregon State on Saturday.
The Cardinal came out strong against the Eagles as the dual began at 165 pounds. Junior Kyle Meyer, wrestling at 165 pounds for the first time in his career, posted a 9-5 decision over Phillip Barreiro to give Stanford the early lead.
Bret Baumbach, also wrestling up a weight class for the first time in his career, added to the Cardinal lead at 174 pounds. The junior secured a fall over Keithen Cast in 4:11. It marks the third fall of the season for Baumbach and improves his record to 10-4 in duals this year.
American tallied it first win of the dual at 184 pounds, where Thomas Barreiro recorded an 11-4 decision against Stanford junior Alan Yen.
Redshirt freshman Michael Sojka scored the final points of the day for Stanford at 197 pounds. The rookie registered a 17-2 technical fall over Devon Bradley to capture his fifth dual-win of the season.
American won the final six bouts of the dual to seal the victory over Stanford, which has fallen in its last eight duals.
Diving
Noah Garcia finished second on the 3-meter board to lead Stanford at the Bruin Diving Invitational this past weekend. The Cardinal fared well during its first competition of the New Year and returns to the boards with upcoming league meets at Arizona State (Jan. 25) and Arizona (Jan. 26).
Garcia (565.15) was fifth and Taylor Sishc (562.25) was sixth in the 1-meter event. Connor Kuremsky (558.85) rounded out the top 10 with an eight-place showing.
Garcia (683.90) took second on the 3-meter board with Kuremsky (587.45) placing ninth.
Meanwhile, Stanford placed five women in the top 20 of the 1-meter event.
Stephanie Phipps was second with 270.00 points in the prelims of the 1-meter and placed third overall with a 530.45. Sloane Brazina (485.65) was 10th in front of 11th-place Kelly Markle (483.65), 13th-place Lillian Hinrichs (474.55) and 14th-place Alexandra Clay (472.80).
Phipps (547.75) was seventh in the 3-meter with Clay (498.35) taking 16th.
