The body of a Mountain View woman struck and killed by a car on the Stanford campus two weeks ago was returned to her family in Mexico Monday, thanks to the efforts of co-workers and a student group.

Sandra De Anda, 33, had immigrated here from Carrillo Puerto, Nayarit, Mexico, and was working at the Law Cafe at Stanford Law School.

She was struck on the morning of April 26 while crossing Galvez Street where it meets Arboretum Road, according to Officer Eric Parsons of the California Highway Patrol. Parsons said a “gold Chevy,” which had been waiting at the intersection to turn left, hit her at about 8:35 a.m. She died two days later from her injuries.

No charges have been filed in the incident, and the case is still under investigation.

In an e-mail to faculty and students soon after the incident, Catherine Glaze, associate dean for student affairs at Stanford Law School, said De Anda “was a single mother with two small children -- 8 and 10. Her family would like to ship her body to Mexico for burial but is overwhelmed by the expense.” Glaze wrote that “shipping a body can cost close to $15,000 and then there are funeral expenses on top of that.”

Glaze said the Stanford Latino Law Students Association was “coordinating an effort to collect donations from students, faculty, and staff.” The group later reported that its efforts were successful, with some help from the Mexican government.

Visitation for De Anda, who lived on Fairmont Street in Mountain View, was held last Saturday at Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary. Immediate family members include her two children, Marilyn and Odalis; parents Antonio and Maria; and siblings Elba and Marco Antonio.
