Palo Alto parents named to site-selection panel
Advisory committee will weigh pros and cons of two campuses for 13th elementary school
|
Eight Palo Alto parents and four school administrators have been named to a committee to advise the Palo Alto school district on a location for opening a 13th elementary school.
The Elementary Site Selection Advisory Committee will meet twice monthly, beginning Monday, Jan. 14, through March, to evaluate the suitability of Garland School at 870 N. California Avenue versus Greendell School at 4120 Middlefield Road, based on criteria approved by the Board of Education.
Garland is currently under lease to the independent Stratford School, and Greendell currently houses the district's Young Fives and Preschool Family programs, as well as vocational-education offices.
The committee's work is due to be completed by April, and the Board of Education is expected by May to choose a site for a new school, which would open by fall of 2017 and possibly sooner.
Parents named to the committee are Amy Darling, who has a 5-year-old son attending Palo Alto's Young Fives program as well as a 2-year-old daughter; Asha Guha, a Gunn High School parent who is active in Partners in Education; Laura Landolfi, whose three children attend Ohlone Elementary School; lawyer and businessman David Liu, parent of three, the oldest of which is a first-grader at Walter Hays Elementary School; artist Xiaoqin (Victoria) Liu, whose two children attend Jordan Middle School and Palo Verde Elementary School; Tony Putulin, a Palo Alto High School parent; Kirstin Sego, who has a 14-year-old stepdaughter at Jordan, a second-grader at Ohlone and a preschooler who will enter kindergarten next year; and real-estate professional Chris Taylor, who has a daughter attending El Carmelo Elementary School and another who will start kindergarten in 2014.
Administrators on the committee are Escondido Elementary School Principal Danae Reynolds; Greendell School Principal Sharon Keplinger; Director of Elementary Education Kathleen Meagher and Chief Technology Officer Ann Dunkin.
Committee meetings are open to the public.
The first will be held Monday, Jan. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. at school district headquarters, 25 Churchill Ave.
