 | Menlo College is losing a women's volleyball coach because the Stanford men's volleyball team is gaining a full-time assistant.
Daniel Rasay, who has been a volunteer assistant at Stanford and the women's coach at Menlo the past three years, will assume new duties at Stanford effective immediately.
Rasay departs Menlo after a remarkable 2012 season, in which the Oaks finished undefeated in Cal Pac Conference play and culminated in a trip to the NAIA National Championships.
Rasay, a Hawaii grad, was named the Cal Pac Coach of the Year.
"It's been a great experience and a great honor to have been the head coach of a pretty storied volleyball program, and to go through a growth process of getting the team back to the National Tournament and building something that will hopefully continue for years to come," Rasay said. "It's been a growth process for me as a coach as well, of course on the court in terms of strategy, but also managing off the court things and being a better communicator."
Rasay finished his Oaks tenure with an impressive 24-9 (.727) conference record. He has coached seven players who earned all-Cal Pac Conference honors.
Rasay's stint has also included two Conference Newcomer of the Year honors (Camille Miller in 2011 and Nicole Yap in 2012), one Cal Pac Libero of the Year distinction (Mika Mendoza in 2012), and this season's Conference Player of the Year Award, which was given to sophomore outside hitter Courtney Calicdan.
"Coach Rasay has kept up with the proud tradition of our storied volleyball program, even lifting the Oaks to greater heights throughout his time here," Menlo Athletic Director Keith Spataro said. "This past season was one for the ages, and he has made the Athletics Department and the entire school extremely proud."
In Rasay's first year with the Cardinal, the team captured its second-ever NCAA Division I national championship. — Menlo Athletics Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
