The 30-team Bianchini Memorial Invitational wrestling tournament celebrated its 27th year of existence on Saturday at Cupertino High School and Gunn provided plenty of highlights for the celebration.

The Titans won their first-ever Bianchini title with 189 points, upsetting second-ranked Palma (161) and several other schools outside the Central Coast Section. Mitty was third with 142.50 points.

Gunn produced three champions and nine medalists overall.

"My team keeps surprising me in a good way," said coach Chris Horpel, now in his 10th season as Gunn's head wrestling coach. "I was especially impressed with Ian Cramer, who pinned all four opponents in the first or second period on his way to the 138-pound title."

Cramer won his division with a pin of Andrew Corral of Summit Tahoma at 1:34, a pin of Jeremiah Bautista of Fremont at 2:23, a pin of Max Dygert of Monta Vista in 2:57 and a pin of Will Amos of Redwood in 1:29.

Cramer's older brother, Eric, captured the 132-pound title with a a major decision and three pins -- the last one coming in the finals against Brandon Watson of Monterey in 1:35.

Gunn's third champion was Cadence Lee at 106 pounds. She had three matches, pinning her first opponent in just 44 seconds before winning her next two by decision -- including a 5-2 win over Nick Newman of Healdsburg in the finals to become the first girl ever to win her weight class at this tournament.

Gunn's Stephen Martin was second at 170 pounds after winning a pair of matches before dropping a 3-0 decision in the finals.

Teammate Sean Lydster was third at 195 pounds with a 3-1 record, Daniel Papp was fourth at 126 with a 3-2 mark, Blaze Lee (145) and Harsha Mokkarala (220) both were fifth with 3-2 marks, and Eric Calderon was seventh at 285.

Gunn actually won this tournament in 1974, when it was held at Monta Vista High School and it was not yet called the Bianchini Memorial.

A day earlier, Gunn had five medalists and finished seventh in the Ruppel 2nd Man (JV) Invitational. Gunn's Tavor Baharov won the 138-pound title.

At the Apple Cider Classic at Watsonville High on Saturday, Austin Wilson of Menlo-Atherton finished second at 120 pounds after being pinning by Albert Lujan-Arias of St. Francis at 4:00.

Girls basketball
Gunn opened its SCVAL De Anza Division season by holding host Los Gatos to just 11 percent shooting from the field on the way to a 44-14 victory on Saturday night.

Junior guard Zoe Zwerling led the Titans (1-0, 8-3) with 16 points, three rebounds and three steals while shooting 62 percent from the field. Meghan Mahoney grabbed eight rebounds with four steals and two blocks and Sarah Longyear added seven rebounds for Gunn in its best defensive performance of the season.

In Los Altos Hills, Pinewood jumped out to a 22-9 first-quarter lead and held on for a 59-55 nonleague victory over visiting International.

Marissa Hing tallied 14 points with four assists and fellow sophomore Gabi Bade added 13 points with four assists, making a quartet of 3-pointers. Junior Leeana Bade added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers (10-3), who will open West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) action Wednesday against visiting Sacred Heart Prep.

The Gators (12-2) tuned up for the division opener with a 76-16 romp over visiting Prospect on Saturday. SHP grabbed a 45-5 halftime lead and coasted behind the one-two scoring punch of sisters Meghan and Melissa Holland, who combined for 29 points. Jessica Koenig added 13 points and freshman Riley Hemm contributed 10.

Boys' soccer
Sacred Heart Prep jumped out to an early lead in the fifth minute on a goal by Nick Salzman that was assisted by Robert Hellman. The Gators (3-2-1) blanked visiting Hillsdale until the 82nd minute, when the Knights scored to force a 1-1 deadlock in nonleague action Saturday.

Girls' soccer
Menlo School wrapped up its two-day tour of La Jolla with a 3-3 draw against The Bishop's School on Saturday.

After being down 1-0 at half, the Knights bounced back when freshman Elena Gray scored with 12 minutes into second half unassisted by stealing a goal kick. Five minutes later, junior Chandler Wickers scored by intercepting a clearance ball.

The Bishop's tied the score at 2 then Menlo scored its third with a long free kick by juniors Lindsay Karle to Emma LaPorte with 13 minutes left in the game. The Bishop's tied the game with five minutes remaining in the game.

"It was a well-played game against a very talented Bishop's team with no weaknesses anywhere," Menlo assistant Jorge Chen said.

Menlo (2-2-4) opens defense of its West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) on Thursday against host Crystal Springs.
