Shaw loses out on national award to ND coach

Bookmark and Share
Stanford's 20-13 overtime football loss to Notre Dame in October not only possibly cost the Cardinal a berth in the BCS National Championship Game, but most likely cost Stanford coach David Shaw a handful of national honors.

On Wednesday, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly was named the Walter Camp 2012 Coach of the Year. The award is voted upon by the nation's 124 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.

Over the past few weeks, Kelly has been named coach of the year by four different organizations -- Home Depot, FWAA/Eddie Robinson, The Associated Press and now the Walter Camp.

Shaw was a finalist for a number of the awards, including the Eddie Robinson and Associated Press honors.

Had Stanford beaten Notre Dame and finished the rest of the season the way it did, the Cardinal would have taken a 12-1 record into its final bowl game.

Instead, Stanford went to the Rose Bowl game and beat Wisconsin, 20-14, to finish 12-2. The Cardinal would love to return to the Rose Bowl -- site of the 2014 BCS National Championship Game.
