Alan Sataloff, the CEO of the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center since 2004, is quitting to take a position in Chicago, according to an announcement by the Jewish Community Center Chicago.

Sataloff, who will become the CEO and general director, will be the 11th director of the 109-year-old JCC Chicago and is expected to take his post in March 2013. He will replace retiring executive director Marty Levine, who led the organization in Chicago for 38 years, according to a December statement by the Chicago nonprofit organization.

He led a $140 million campaign to build the new Oshman Center in Palo Alto to serve the growing Silicon Valley Jewish and Israeli communities. The center is one of the top 10 largest JCCs in the nation, according to the Chicago JCC.

Sataloff previously led JCCs around the country for 22 years prior to his Palo Alto tenure, including in Richmond, Va.; Seattle, Wash.; West Orange, N.J.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Houston, Texas. He was ranked as the 18th highest paid executive of a nonprofit organization in the country by the San Francisco Business Times in 2010, earning $463,551.

"I am excited to be coming to Chicago. The city's large and diverse Jewish community provides for tremendous opportunities to make a difference. I look forward to building on JCC Chicago's rich history and providing innovative programs to serve individuals and families in meaningful and inspiring ways," he said in a statement through the Chicago JCC.

"We are grateful for Alan's leadership and passion during these pivotal years of building the Oshman Family JCC from a vision into a thriving center for Jewish and community life," Oshman's board President Daryl Messinger said. The board is in the process of searching for an new CEO to lead the organization's more than 9,000 members, she added.

Sataloff did not return requests for comment on Friday and Monday regarding his decision or his potential replacement.

Alan, Thanks for leaving Palo Alto with a hideous, offensive JCC building.

Palo Alto's loss is Chicago's gain. Alan is a wonderful asset to the JCC. It was terrific to work with him and everyone else at the JCC, during the many years the "To Life! Jewish Cultural Street Fair" was held on California Avenue.

Alan's expertise, friendly, competent and collaborative management will be greatly missed. For everything he and everyone at the JCC has done to share their rich culture with the community, thank you!

As an aside, this may be a good forum to share that I am really liking the looks of the Oshman Center. At first, I wondered about the size and the placement. But when I'm at the stop sign on Charleston & San Antonio, the building gets more & more interesting to me. I like its varied roof lines and the colors. I've been there twice, for events, and it's as nice inside as it is outside.
