Three killed in crash on Interstate 280
Four lanes shut down until 7 p.m.

Three people were killed in a pulled-over car that was struck by a passing vehicle on northbound Interstate Highway 280 in unincorporated San Mateo County near Redwood City this afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
A Lexus sedan was stopped at the center divide just north of Edgewood Road when it was struck by a black Volkswagen that swerved into the center divide around 3:10 p.m., CHP Officer Art Montiel said.
Three people in the Lexus were pronounced dead at the scene, while the Volkswagen's driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Montiel said. Montiel said the Volkswagen driver will be arrested upon his release from the hospital on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
A Sig-alert was issued at 3:35 p.m. Four lanes have been shut down, leaving only the far right lane open, according to the CHP. The lanes are expected to reopen around 7 p.m., according to the CHP.

Why was the Lexus, a supposedly reliable car, pulled over on the shoulder?

But, on a different note, Palo Alto traffic was terrible last night. It took me 45 minutes to get from south Palo Alto to Stanford. Middlefield, Alma, El Camino, were nightmares and I believe 101 was just as bad. The radio traffic person was basically telling their listeners to stop for dinner and try later anywhere around Palo Alto.
This is what happens with traffic calming measures. Palo Alto can't cope with extra traffic. If the local traffic report tells all motorists to stay away from Palo Alto then we must be a joke to them.

Posted by Needless Loss, a resident of the Old Palo Alto neighborhood, on Dec 15, 2012 at 3:29 pm A good point my husband brought up: if your car breaks down in traffic, pull over to the far right and get out of your car. Put the hood up and the flashers on.
Apparently, other drivers run into disabled cars parked on the side of the road rather frequently, so the most important of these is GET OUT OF YOUR CAR, especially if it is dark!

Posted by MIdtown resident, a resident of the Midtown neighborhood, on Dec 16, 2012 at 9:55 am @Needless Loss - Getting out of your car is probably a good thing if you're on the shoulder on the right so long as you move as far right as you can. If you're stopped at the left, close to the median, I think it may be better to actually sit on the median behind the car or even in the car. I'm not sure what the right action is in this case.
