 | Stanford women's volleyball associate head coach Denise Corlett has been named the Division I National Assistant Coach of the Year, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced today. Corlett is a two-time recipient of the award, also receiving the honor in 2010.
Corlett, now in her 24th season with the Cardinal and her 17th as the associate head coach, helped lead Stanford to another successful season. The Cardinal captured its 15th Pac-12 title, and its sixth conference championship in the last seven years. The 2012 Cardinal squad advanced to its 32nd consecutive NCAA Tournament and reached the quarterfinals for the seventh time in the past 12 years.
Stanford, with Corlett's assistance, registered a 30-4 record this season and finished 19-1 in the Pac-12 Conference. In Corlett's time with the program, the Cardinal holds a 671-115 (.854) record and has captured 14 league titles and six national championships. She has also helped guide 24 players to 59 AVCA All-America awards, and seven players have earned national player of the year honors during her time on The Farm.
The AVCA presented the award, which was created in 2010, at the Coaches Honors Luncheon in Louisville, Ky., held in conjunction with the AVCA Annual Convention. The award recognizes assistant coaches for their efforts and roles within the program and the community.

Stanford senior pitcher Mark Appel has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-America first team, as announced Wednesday by the NCBWA. Appel is one of six Pac-12 Conference players to earn the recognition, as the league's four first-team representatives are the most from any conference.
Appel, a first team All-Pac-12 performer in 2012, went 10-2 with a 2.56 ERA to go along with 130 strikeouts and 30 walks last season. Appel pitched at least 7.0 innings in 14 of 16 starts and tossed five complete games, earning a first team All-America nod from the NCBWA as a junior.
Selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the eighth overall pick in last summer's MLB First Year Player Draft, Appel later announced he would return to The Farm for his senior season.
The Cardinal finished 41-18 last season and returns to the field Feb. 15-17 with a three-game series at Rice. The home opener against Cal (Feb. 19) will take place at Sunken Diamond.— Stanford Athletics Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
