Stanford's Maya DiRado finished fifth in the 400-meter individual medley Wednesday during the FINA Short Course World Championships at Sinan Erdem Arena in Istanbul, Turkey.

DiRado was second among the eight-person field after the first 50 meters (29.01) before falling back to finish in 4:28.55.

Hannah Miley of Great Britain won the gold to become the first British women to win the discipline at the championships.

While China's Ye Shiwen raced her down over the freestyle leg, Miley was strong enough to edge Ye out by 0.19 seconds in a championship record of 4:23.14.

Former Stanford standout Julia Smit is the current world recordholder in the event, setting the 4:21.04 benchmark in 2009. Smit is now retired from the sport.

DiRado now looks ahead to competing in the 200 individual medley on Friday.
