Pinewood used its trademark tough defense and three-point shooting to capture its own Pinewood Classic girls' basketball tournament on Saturday in Los Altos Hills.

The Panthers (3-0) completed their three-game tourney sweep with a solid 46-38 victory over Gunn in the title game. Pinewood won its own tourney for the first time since 2007.

The Titans (4-2) were limited to single-digit scoring in all but the third quarter, when Pinewood pulled away with a 17-10 advantage in that period.

Junior Leeana Bade led Pinewood with 12 points plus seven rebounds and sophomore Marissa Hing added 10 points plus six assists. The Panthers made 10 of 37 three-pointers with Bade making 3-of-5 from trey range.

Bade, Hing and Gabi Bade all were named to the all-tournament team. Leeana Bade and Hing each scored 32 points over the three-game tourney.

Pinewood got all of its points from underclassmen, as its only senior -- Angelina Mapa -- went scoreless.

Gunn got 13 points from Zoe Zwerling and 10 from Meghan Mahoney and held a 9-7 first-quarter lead before Pinewood pulled away. Zwerling and teammate Sarah Klem also made the all-tournament team.

"They have (too) many that penetrate extremely well," said Gunn coach Sarah Stapp. "It's hard to defend penetration and the 3-ball. Better on-ball defense was needed."

Gunn had advanced with a 49-39 win over Presentation as Zwerling and Mahoney split 24 points while Pinewood reached the finals with a 49-31 win over Los Gatos. The Panthers were 11-of-36 from three-point range with Hing tallying 11 points to lead the way.

At the King's Academy Winter Classic in Sunnyvale, Sacred Heart Prep bounced back from its first loss of the season in the semifinals and captured third place with a 51-23 romp over Lincoln (San Jose) on Saturday.

Helen Gannon, who the previous weekend was playing in the CIF Division IV state championship volleyball match, led the Gators (5-1) with 12 points. SHP pulled away from an 18-12 halftime lead with 33 points in the second half.

At the Paris Twins Classic at Piedmont High in Oakland, Eastside Prep bounced back from a tough loss to Lynbrook with a 39-26 victory over Marin Catholic in the third-place game.

Sophomore Destiny Graham led the Panthers (4-2) with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Leading scorer Hashima Carothers was limited to just three points and four rebounds but still made the all-tournament team.

Eastside Prep forced Marin Catholic into 27 turnovers and 22 percent shooting, which included 0-for-12 from three-point range.

At the Terra Nova Tiger Varsity Tournament in Pacifica, Menlo School dropped a 57-42 decision to Moreau Catholic of Hayward in the consolation championship.

The Knights (1-3) got 12 points from freshman Hannah Paye, who also was named to the all-tournament team. Donya Dehnad led the team in rebounds with 10. Freshman McKenzie Duffner chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

Menlo played without starter Jasmine Williams, who missed the weekend games while attending a school-sponsored diversity conference in Houston, Texas. The Knights were already without Drew Edelman, Maddy Price and Lauren Lete.

Also in the tournament, Castilleja (3-4) dropped the seventh-place game to Washington (San Francisco), 47-45. The game was tied at 41 and 45 before Washington came up with a defensive stop in the closing second and went the length of the court for the winning basket.

Maddie Tarr had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double while Castilleja teammates Olivia Nicholls and Lauren Rantz became the nine the 10th players in school history to reach 500 career points.

Wrestling
Gunn hosted its annual quadrangular meet and went 2-1, posting victories over Salinas (78-6) and Watsonville (75-6) before losing to Serra in the finals (36-32). The Padres came in ranked No. 3 in the Central Coast Section while Gunn was ranked No. 9.

Serra and Gunn each won seven matches, but the Padres had five pins compared to the Titans' two falls and two technical falls.

"I was pleased with our progess and effort this early in the season," said Gunn coach Chris Horpel. "Whenever you start a season with a lot of new faces (Gunn has eight newcomers), you never know what's going to happen. If one close match had gone the other way, and there were several that could have, we would have beaten Serra. And, Serra is considered one of the best in CCS . . . so, I think we have another good bunch to work with this year."

Gunn junior Cadence Lee competed at 113 pounds and won all three of her matches by pin -- including her Serra opponent in just 55 seconds. She was the only Gunn wrestler to pin all three opponents.

At the 3rd annual Webber Lawson tournament at Fremont High, Palo Alto finshed fourth -- trailing Mission Oak (Central Section), Mitty and Fremont -- after winning the event last year.

Erik Anderson led Paly by winning the 182-pound division while fellow senior Trenton Marshall was second at 160. Senior Jordan Smith (120 pounds) and junior Andrew Frick (220) both were third in their respective divisions.

Anderson opened with a bye, posted a 20-5 tech fall in the second round, pinned his semifinal opponent and had an 11-0 major decision in the finals over Araad Sarrami of Saratoga.

"The boys wrestled pretty well for the most part," said Paly coach Dave Duran, who only brought six of his possible 14 wrestlers. "All six were expected to place, and they did."

Palo Alto came into the tourney off a 38-25 dual-match loss to San Benito.

Boys' water polo
The 2012 Central Coast Section All-Stars defeated the NCS All-Stars, 12-8, in the seventh annual Pacific Zone Senior All-Star Game played Sunday afternoon at Soda Swim Center at Campolindo High in Moraga.

The annual showdown brought together the top senior male water polo players in the Bay Area. Bret Hinrichs from Sacred Heart Prep scored four goals to pace the CCS team while M-A's Harrison Holland-McCowan added two and Zach Churukian of SHP finished with one. Also playing for the CCS was SHP goalie Will Runkel and M-A's Morgan Olson-Fabbro.

Girls' water polo
Cathleen Cantoni of Mitty scored four goals and Carla Tocchini of St. Ignatius added three as the Central Coast Section All-Stars defeated their North Coast Section counterparts, 15-10, in the 7th annual Pacific Zone Senior All-Star Game on Sunday at the Soda Center at Campolindo High in Moraga.

Also participating for the CCS girls were Jenna Swartz of Menlo-Atherton, Lauren Lesyna of Gunn, P.J. Bigley and Bridgette Harper of Sacred Heart Prep and Grace Arnold of Castilleja.
