 | Stanford women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer keeps asking for contributions from others than her "Big Three."
Taylor Greenfield took the opportunity Sunday to show she's ready for the spotlight, and to give VanDerveer some options.
She scored a career-high 18 points, hitting six 3-pointers, to help the top-ranked Cardinal beat host Gonzaga, 69-41, in a marquee nonconference matchup that was played in front of a sellout crowd.
"It really shows what kind of team we are," Greenfield said. "When someone is hot we find them. They want you to shoot until the streak ends."
Greenfield helped Stanford (8-0) make 8 of 14 long-range shots. She was 6-of-8, which helped Stanford gain an early advantage on Gonzaga. The Cardinal shot 49 percent from the floor to the Bulldogs' 25 percent. Joslyn Tinkle, who scored 16 points, made 2 of 4 3-point shots.
The trio of Chiney Ogwumike, Tinkle and Amber Orrange still left their marks on the contest. Ogwumike recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Orrange had five assists.
Mikaela Ruef, who has worked herself into the starting lineup, grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cardinal, which embarks on a 13-day break for finals.
Stanford hosts Pacific at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 before traveling to South Carolina and Tennessee. The Cardinal has played just twice at home thus far, with just two more scheduled before the start of Pac-12 play.
Gonzaga missed 13 of its first 14 shots and Stanford took advantage to build a 23-5 lead.
The Zags' shot just 17.9 percent (7-of-39) in the first half, and did not attempt a free throw.
The game featured a matchup of sisters Joslyn Tinkle and Elle Tinkle, a freshman at Gonzaga. Their father is Montana head coach Wayne Tinkle, who displayed a shirt with "Gonzford" written on it.
"It's a special feeling for them to watch their daughters out there and at this level," Joslyn said. "It was extremely fun."
Tinkle added eight rebounds to her totals while Elle finished with two points and three rebounds.
