Residents advised to leave barricades up

 | Drivers can be cited for removing traffic cones and barricades through a closed/flooded area, according to Linda Clerkson, City of Palo Alto public communications spokesperson.
"It is also very dangerous," she wrote in a news release, noting that the closures are usually due to debris or flooding.
Palo Alto Police and Fire responded to numerous traffic accidents during the storm, she reported, and drivers are advised to slow down and "exercise extreme caution."
By early afternoon, the underpass at Oregon Expressway and Alma Street reopened after excess water was pumped out, Clerkson reported.
By 1 p.m., all creek levels in Palo Alto were below 50 percent limits. Earlier, San Francisquito Creek at the Chaucer Street Bridge exceeded the 50 percent limit, but is already receding. At West Bayshore Road, the creek exceeded the 70 percent threshold due to incoming tide, then stabilized, she noted.
Residents are asked to check storm-drain catch-basin grates on their blocks and keep them free of leaves and debris, according to the city's website. Also, avoid driving through ponded water or flooded areas to avoid stalling.
A view of the creek monitor cameras, information on power outages and a map of sandbag locations (at Mitchell Park and the Palo Alto Airport) is available at the city's website.
More news on the storm and its aftermath will be posted at the city's website.

Posted by Bob , a resident of the Community Center neighborhood, on Dec 2, 2012 at 12:57 pm check the city creek website and creek/s monitor. www.cityofpaloalto.org
Click on creek monitor. All the water coming down from Foothill Park, etc. and Corte Madera Creek and others in the foothills is 'delayed' action after the storm. Takes a full hour, so it is said for the runoff to come downhill. SF Creek at 101 is right up to the top. It is now 12:55 p.m.

Posted by Hmmm, a resident of East Palo Alto, on Dec 2, 2012 at 1:10 pm Thanks, Bob - appreciate the update. I use the monitor & saw the SF creek in several places on the west side but haven't ventured to the east side yet, so that's why I was asking. I hope you're staying dry!

Posted by Chris, a resident of the Community Center neighborhood, on Dec 2, 2012 at 9:43 pm We were unable to drive through the Oregon underpass this morning due to the flooding. As we took the detour over Alma we looked down and saw a Volvo trying to drive through.
The water was halfway up their driver's side door. I was astounded that they kept on plowing on into deeper water. Crazy.

Posted by Don't kill me PA driver, a resident of the Barron Park neighborhood, on Dec 3, 2012 at 3:04 pm So let me get this straight...People were moving the hazard cones that were set out so they could drive though? for what I would assume could only be convenience? So many, in fact that the police have to issue reminders not to do this? I can't believe what I'm reading. What is it about Palo Alto drivers?!?!?! The worst.
