Menlo's frosh paces locals at state cross country

Menlo School freshman Zoe Enright capped a standout first year of running cross country by placing 16th overall in the girls' Division IV race at the CIF State Championships on Saturday over the 5,000-meter layout at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Enright clocked 19:13 while recording the highest finish of any of the 19 local entrants (nine individuals, two teams).

Menlo sophomore teammate Lizzie Lacy ran to the second-best finish while taking 23rd in the Division IV race in 19:21. Sacred Heart Prep sophomore Gillian Belton also competed in the race, taking 79th in 20:39.

"We are so proud of them," Menlo coach Donoson FitzGerald said of his two runners. "They both had fabulous seasons and they kept it up today. They ran really smart."

The best local time was recorded by Gunn freshman Gillian Meeks, who clocked 18:56 while taking 57th in the Division I girls' race. Palo Alto sophomore Katie Foug was 95th in the same race while running 19:30.

In the Division I boys' race, Menlo-Atherton senior George Baier finished 51st in 16:02. Baier had the fastest time among the local boys running Saturday.

In the Division IV boys' race, Sacred Heart Prep sophomore Daniel Hill was 61st in 16:54 and senior teammate Steven Glassmoyer was 80th in 17:07.

The Priory boys finished 16th as a team in the Division V race with Chris Gregory leading the way with a 17:10 time for 62nd. Teammate Andrew Christensen was 66th in 17:14. Other Priory scorers included Leo Berez (17:53), Joe Farned (17:56), and Ross Corey (18:09) .

Eastside Prep senior Christian Rosales was 78th in the same race, clocking 17:27.

In the girls' Division V race, Castilleja finished 19th in the team competition. Senior Fiona Maloney-McCrystle led the Gators by taking 40th overall in 20:06. Teammate Alina Brown took 71st in 20:53. Other Castilleja scorers included Abby Holston (21:22), Norma Rodriguez (23:04), and Julia McGeee (23:43).
