 | Chasson Randle scored 22 points but it wasn't enough as the Stanford men's basketball team dropped a 78-70 decision to undefeated Missouri in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Thursday.
Dwight Powell added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal (3-2), which has lost two straight after an eight-game winning streak dating to last year's run to the NIT title.
"It definitely was a physical game," Powell said. "We learned a lot. Those guys competed hard especially offensively and showed us that we have to have five guys rebound and we cannot allow them to bully us underneath like they did today. Something we can definitely improve on."
Stanford plays the loser of the Louisville-Northern Iowa game in Friday's second round on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
Freshman Christian Sanders sank a pair of free throws to bring the Cardinal within 68-66 late, but the Tigers were able to pull away down the stretch.
Missouri was 22 of 25 from the foul line, including 10 of 11 in the final minutes.
John Gage, who hit a 3-pointer in the late going to keep the Cardinal close, added 10 points.
Randle shot 50 percent (7 of 14) from the field after hitting just four of his previous 22 attempts. Guard Aaron Bright missed the game with a foot injury suffered against Belmont.
"I thought we went out and competed well," Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said. "We could have executed a little bit better. I thought defensively, we could have been better as well."
