Stanford's preseason All-American Chiney Ogwumike took home the 2012-13 season's first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor in women's basketball, the conference announced Monday.

It is the fourth Pac-12 Player of the Week honor of Ogwumike's career. The Cypress, Texas native captured the award three straight weeks last January (Jan. 16, 23, 30). It is also Stanford's 84th conference player of the week honor, most among all conference schools.

Ogwumike averaged 22.5 points and 12.0 rebounds while shooting 67.9 percent from the field (19-for-28) over fourth-ranked Stanford's opening-weekend victories over Fresno State and Santa Clara.

Friday night she scored 23 points with 17 rebounds and four blocks as the Cardinal extended its national-best winning streak to 80 with a 72-61 win over Fresno State.

Two days later she went for 22 points, seven rebounds and made four steals as the Cardinal dealt the Broncos a 92-57 defeat at the Leavey Center. Ogwumike went 9-of-14 from the field against Santa Clara

A consensus preseason All-American as well as an early season candidate for the Wade Trophy and John R. Wooden Award, Ogwumike will help lead Stanford (2-0) into its biggest test of the young campaign this weekend. The Cardinal travels to Honolulu for the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic, taking on No. 1 Baylor on Friday in a rematch of last year's national semifinal game.

Stanford also takes on host Hawaii on Saturday before closing the trip Sunday against Tennessee-Martin.

Football
Senior tight end Zach Ertz has been named one of eight semifinalists for the John Mackey Award by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The John Mackey Award is given annually to the nation's most outstanding collegiate tight end.

Ertz leads Stanford in receiving this season with 47 receptions for 641 yards and five touchdowns, while tallying team-high receiving in five games. The 6-foot-6 senior has also recorded game-winning touchdown receptions in both of Stanford's top-ranked wins: versus No. 2 USC and No. 13 Oregon State. His 71 yards and fourth-quarter touchdown against USC earned him John Mackey Tight End of the Week honors.

Last year, Coby Fleener for Stanford was a semifinalist of the 2011 John Mackey Award. He was selected as the first overall tight end in the 2012 NFL Draft this past April by the Indianapolis Colts. Fleener is one of six former Stanford tight ends currently in the NFL.

The other 2012 semifinalists are Jack Doyle (Western Kentucky), Tyler Eifert (Notre Dame), Gavin Escobar (San Diego State), Joseph Fauria (UCLA), Ryan Otten (San Jose State), Austin Seferian-Jenkins (Washington) and Zach Sudfeld (Nevada).

Women's volleyball
Stanford outside hitter Brittany Howard has been named the Pac-12 women's volleyball Defensive and Freshman Player of the Week, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.

Stanford (24-2) defeated Washington State and No. 5 Washington last week to remain undefeated in the Pac-12 (16-0) and extend its winning streak to 22 matches.

Howard was a key part of the Cardinal's sweep over Washington State and a four-set win over then fifth-ranked Washington. The Los Altos native averaged 3.14 kill, 6.14 digs and 0.57 blocks per set on the weekend.

She posted her sixth double-double of the season against the Cougars with 10 kills and a team-high 12 digs to go with three blocks.

Against the Huskies, Howard really made her presence felt in the back row as she posted her seventh double-double of the year and third in a row. She finished with a team-high 12 kills and 31 digs. The 31 digs were a career high and tied for the third most in a single match in school history, and the most by a non-libero.

It is the first defensive honor for Howard, who also earned Freshman of the Week accolades last week. Stanford now boasts 84 weekly awards and six Freshman of the Week honors.

Stanford's 22-match winning streak marks its longest such streak in a single season under head coach John Dunning and the longest for the program in a single season since 1998.

The Cardinal travels to Los Angeles this week to take on No. 8 USC (Thursday) and No. 5 UCLA (Friday), both at 7 p.m.
