 | Chiney Ogwumike and Joslyn Tinkle made sure Stanford's season-opener was the same as the previous 11. The "twins" combined for 43 points, 25 rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead the fourth-ranked women's basketball team to a 72-61 victory over visiting Fresno State on Friday night.
The Bulldogs gave Stanford everything it could handle, and had the game all knotted up at 42 five minutes into the second half.
That's when the Cardinal found another gear and went on a 14-2 run to open a lead it never gave up en route to its 80th straight home victory.
Stanford commutes down the El Camino Real for its first road game of the season, a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee at Santa Clara.
The Cardinal left a lot of run for improvement after making one of 17 3-point attempts and getting themselves outrebounded by a 44-41 margin, including 25-17 on the offensive rebounds.
"It was physical and we didn't match that inside," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "Chiney got O-boards but we didn't keep them from getting O-boards. That's attention to detail, boxing out. I think our team will learn from this. We're lucky we didn't lose because of it but we will in the future if we don't correct it."
Ogwumike and Tinkle also combined to shoot nearly 65 percent from the field (20 of 31) while the rest of the team combined to shoot just over 35 percent.
Amber Orrange added 14 points on 6 of 15 shooting, five assists and two steals.
