Pac-12 soccer honors for Stanford women

Bookmark and Share
Senior captain Rachel Quon and keeper Emily Oliver earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors for offense and defense, respectively, after leading Stanford to an L.A. sweep last weekend and the team's fourth consecutive conference title.

Quon, a senior from Lake Forest, Ill., had a hand in a pair of deciding goals against USC and No. 2 UCLA over the weekend that clinched a fourth straight Pac-12 title for the Cardinal to earn Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors.

On Friday, she assisted on teammate Alina Garciamendez's winning goal in double overtime with a well-placed set piece to lift the Stanford to a 1-0 win over USC.

On Sunday, she netted the winning goal against UCLA in the 79th minute to complete a second-half comeback that extended Stanford's Pac-12 winning streak to 41 games. A four-year starter, Quon has tallied 29 career points (5 goals, 19 assists) in 91 games at Stanford. In 2012, she ranks second among Cardinal defenders with 11 points (2 goals, 7 assists).

Oliver, a sophomore from Flossmoor, Ill., collected 13 saves on 23 total shots and allowed just one goal against two of the conference's top shooting teams in USC and UCLA to earn Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Against the Trojans, she notched six saves on 12 total shots and posted her 25th career shutout to help the Cardinal to its 13th in a run of 14 consecutive victories.

On Sunday, in a showdown between the nation's top-ranked teams, Oliver made a series of spectacular saves, including a diving two-handed save late in the match to help the Cardinal to a 2-1 victory over UCLA.

This is the first weekly honor for both players, who are Stanford's 34th and 35th all-time Player of the Week recipients. Quon and Oliver are the first Cardinal duo to earn the award in the same week, as this is the first year that offensive and defensive honors have been given separately.
