Stanford freshman Bret Bonanni was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Bonanni won his second such honor of the season as he led the fourth-ranked Cardinal with 12 goals over the weekend.
Stanford swept MPSF foes No. 8 UC Irvine and No. 9 Long Beach State to improve to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Coming off of a nine-goal performance two Sundays ago against Air Force, Bonanni continued his scoring tear with eight goals in Saturday's 15-4 rout of UC Irvine. Bonanni had his hat trick in the bag by halftime and went on the score five more times as the Cardinal left no doubt with its big win.
The following day the Huntington Beach native added four more goals to his total, teaming up with sophomore Alex Bowen, who scored six times, to help Stanford pull out a 12-11 win over Long Beach State.
Bonanni, who has scored 35 goals over Stanford's past seven games, currently leads the team with 54 on the year, and ranks second in the MPSF with 3.38 goals per game.
The Cardinal breaks from MPSF play this weekend, traveling to UC Davis and Santa Clara for a pair of non-conference contests. Stanford takes on UC Davis Saturday then heads to the South Bay to battle the Broncos Sunday. Both games are set for 12 p.m. starts.
Men's golf
Stanford men's golf played host to the first Stanford Classic at Cypress Point Monday, as the eight-team field played 36 holes in cold, wet weather at the famed course. Ranked No. 2 in Golf Magazine's 2011 list of Best Courses in America, from 1947 until 1991 Cypress Point was one of the three courses used in the Crosby/AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
The Cardinal was victorious in the four-ball play format of the first round, outscoring Washington 10-2 in a heads-up match. The three two-man teams of Patrick Rodgers and Shane Lebow, Steve Kearney and Dominick Francks, and Cameron Wilson and David Boote each earned two points for winning the 18-hole match, and four of the six additional points split between the front and back nines. Texas defeated Michigan, Duke bested USC, and UCLA outpointed Georgia to round out the first-round.
Advancing to the championship bracket for round two, Stanford was paired with Duke in a single ball, alternating shot format. The Cardinal fell to the Blue Devils by a score of 7 ½-4 ½. Rodgers and Lebow won all four points in their pairing, while Boote and Wilson captured half a point and Lebow and Francks were shut out. UCLA defeated Texas and will meet Duke in a six-man singles match play competition tomorrow morning to determine the champion.
Stanford will take on Texas in the consolation contest in the championship bracket tomorrow morning. Georgia and USC, having won their second-round matches against Michigan and Washington, respectively, are paired in the consolation bracket, while Michigan and Washington will face off in the fourth match-up of the day.Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition?
