Three members of last season's Palo Alto High state championship girls' volleyball team enjoyed varying degrees of success this past weekend on the college courts.

Connecticut College freshman Caroline Martin helped the Camels sweep a pair of matches against Salve Regina University and Endicott with solid offensive efforts. Martin had 15 kills and four digs against Salve Regina and added seven kills in addition to hitting over .300 in a sweep of Endicott.

Connecticut College, the No. 2-ranked team in New England, improved to 19-2 with the victories.

University of Washington freshman Melanie Wade, meanwhile, had a career-best night on Sunday while helping the Huskies (8-2, 17-2) defeat visiting Cal, 25-23, 25-15, 25-15 in Pac-12 Conference action.

Making her third career start while playing in only her fourth match this season, the 6-foot-5 Wade had season bests in every category as she produced six kills and a .545 attack percentage while leading the team with three service aces, seven blocks and two digs. Her 12.5 total points were a match high.

Wade also saw considerable action two nights earlier in a tough five-set loss to conference-leading Stanford. She had three kills, four digs and five block assists.

University of Pacific freshman Kimmy Whitson, yet another member of Paly's two-time defending state championship team, put up some good numbers for the Tigers during a pair of Big West Conference losses.

Whitson had 46 assists and three block assists in a 3-2 loss at Hawaii and added 50 assists, nine digs and three kills on Saturday night during a 3-2 loss at Cal State Northridge as Pacific fell to 4-4 in the Big West and 16-5 overall.

In other volleyball action on the weekend:

UC Davis senior Allison Whitson followed a similar path as her younger sister as UC Davis dropped road matches to Hawaii and Cal State Northridge. Whitson had 11 kills, nine digs and four aces against Northridge and 13 kills, 11 digs and three blocks against Hawaii while falling to 4-5 in league (10-12 overall).

Senior captain Taylor Docter from Castilleja entered the Harvard top-10 list for career kills as the Crimson defeated Dartmouth, 3-1, Friday night at home. Docter notched her 10th double-double of the season on a match-best 15 kills and 15 digs as Harvard improved to 5-3 in the Ivy League (8-11 overall). Docter is now tied for 10th on Harvard's career kill list with 922.

Also in the Ivy League, Sacred Heart Prep grad Sarah Daschbach, a freshman, had 20 digs for Princeton in a 3-2 loss to Penn on Friday. The Tigers fell to 6-2 in league and trails first-place Yale by two matches.

Football
After showing off his arm in the early season, Stanford grad Andrew Luck used his legs to help his Indianapolis Colts post a 17-13 victory over visiting Cleveland in NFL action Sunday.

Luck became the first Colts' quarterback since 1988 to run for two touchdowns as he led the Colts to the triumph. Luck scored on runs of three and five yards in addition to competing 16-of-29 passes for 186 yards. He connected with former Stanford teammate Coby Fleener on two occasions for 17 yards.

Women's basketball
Two former Stanford players reached the WNBA championship game on Sunday, but neither had an impact in the outcome as the Indiana Fever posted an 87-78 victory over the Minnesota Lynx to win its first championship.

Indiana's Jeanette Pohlen missed the game due to a torn ACL and Minnesota's Candice Wiggins played only 2:14 and managed one three-pointer.

Men's golf
Stanford grad Zack Miller shot rounds of 68-71-68-72-279 and earned $8,360 at the PGA McGladrey Classic at St. Simons Island, Ga., on Sunday.

Swimming
Former Sacred Heart Prep standout Tom Kremer made his debut with the Stanford men's team during the weekend at the 21st annual Pacific Invitational at the Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex in Stockton.

Stanford only competed on the second day of the two-day event, but totaled 1,063 points to rank second among the four-team field led by Pacific (1,079).

Kremer was second in the 100-yard butterfly (49.70) and third in the 200 fly (1:49.98).

Men's water polo
Senior Tim Wenzlau from Palo Alto High had three goals for Princeton in an 18-9 win over Iona and added a single goal in a 13-6 win over George Washington as the Tigers wrapped up their home season.

Freshman goalie Alex Gow from Menlo-Atherton had 12 saves against George Washington and four against Iona to help Princeton sweep.

Next up for the nationally No. 17-ranked Tigers (5-3, 12-10) will be the Ivy League Championships this weekend in New Haven, Conn.

Elsewhere:

Former Menlo School standout Jack Foley helped Dartmouth win its first New England Conference title after four second-place finishes. Foley, a junior, had two goals in the semifinals against Wesleyan and two goals in a 9-4 win over Boston College in the finals.

Dartmouth is seeded No. 2 in the National Club Water Polo Championships that will be played November 9-11 at Oregon State, with 16 teams from throughout the United States.

This is Foley's first season of college water polo after transferring to Dartmouth as a sophomore last year (from UCSD) and trying his hand at rugby. Dartmouth is the two-time defending national champion in Rugby-7s.
