Stanford claims Big Sail victory over Cal

The Stanford sailing team handed Cal a 2-0 defeat to capture the Big Sail on a picturesque Tuesday at the St. Francis Yacht Club in the Bay waters between Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. The rivals competed in front of a lively contingent of fans, supporters and pep bands of each program.

"The Big Sail is a great tradition and it's great for the alumni to come and watch both teams compete," Stanford head coach John Vandemoer said. "This was a big year for Stanford as our young alums snapped a skid to Cal with their first win since 2005. Our varsity team was able to keep its winning streak alive. There was some quality racing, which is a good testament to all the crews considering the big breeze.

"Our program would like to extend a special thanks to longtime Stanford sailing supporter and one of the founders of the Big Sail, Jaren Leet, and everyone who helps make this a special event each year."

Stanford's varsity squad won each of its two match races against the Golden Bears in the J-105's.

Kevin Laube (skipper), Antoine Screve (tactician and main trimmer), Jack Ortel (jib and spinnaker trimmer), Rebecca King (pit), Katie Riklin (mid-bow) and McKenzie Wilson (bow) teamed to pick up each of the two Cardinal wins in the best-out-of-three event.

Stanford's young alumni picked up a win over Cal as the Golden Bears' masters notched a victory in its respective event.
