Palo Alto High grad earns weekly volleyball honor

Swarthmore College senior Allie Coleman from Palo Alto has been named Centennial Conference women's volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending October 14, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Coleman, a Palo Alto High grad and team co-captain, handed out 34 assists in the Garnet's 3-1 victory against McDaniel, becoming the second player in school history and the 20th CC player to register 3,000 assists in a career. She averaged 6.8 assists per set in a 2-0 week.

Coleman is coming off a 2011 season that saw her earn second team all-conference honors as well as district and league academic honors.

In other volleyball news:

Palo Alto High grad Allison Whitson had eight kills, 14 digs and four block assists to help UC Davis to a 25-21, 25-11, 25-20 sweep of Cal Poly in Big West Conference action on Saturday. The Aggies evened their overall record at 10-10 and improved to 4-3 in conference matches.

In New London, Conn., Palo Alto High grad Caroline Martin had eight kills and Menlo School grad Anelise Hohl added seven kills to help Connecticut College coast to a 3-0 victory against Colby College in a NESCAC match Saturday. The Camels, who are ranked No. 3 in New England, improved to 7-2 in league (16-2 overall) following the 25-11, 25-14, 25-22 win. .

The visiting Mules (2-6, 9-8) were led by Menlo School grad Natalie Roy, who had a match-high 27 digs to go with six kills.

On Friday, Martin produced 15 kills and 15 digs in a 3-0 win over visiting Bates College. Hohl added nine kills for Connecticut College.

In Stockton, Palo Alto High grad Kimmy Whitson has moved into the starting lineup for University of Pacific and came up with a career-best match on Saturday in a 3-2 loss to visiting UC Santa Barbara on Saturday in the Big West Conference. Despite losing at home for the first time this season, the Tigers (4-3, 11-11) got career highs of 43 assists, 16 digs and seven block assists from Whitson. The freshman setter also had four kills.

A night earlier, Whitson had 35 assists and seven digs in a 3-0 win over Cal Poly.

In New York City, senior captain Taylor Docter from Castilleja tallied a match-best 21 kills, two shy of the career-high of 23 she notched at Dartmouth earlier this season, to lead Harvard to a sweep of host Columbia on Saturday, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-20. The Crimson improved to 4-3 in Ivy League play (7-11 overall).

A night earlier in Ithaca, N.Y., Docter had a team-high 14 kills, four blocks and one ace as Harvard defeated host Cornell, 25-19, 25-23, 25-27 and 25-20.

Docter's ace moved her past current assistant coach Christine Wu ('12) for sole possession of sixth place on Harvard's all-time list with 94 career aces.

Women's soccer
Sacred Heart Prep grad Elizabeth Weisman scored a goal in Harvard's 4-1 Ivy League win over host Brown on Saturday. Weisman provided the second, and winning, goal at 58:50. She collected a rebound off a missed shot and directed it into the cage as Harvard improved to 2-1-1 in league (6-3-3 overall).

A week earlier, Harvard freshman forward Emily Mosbacher from Castilleja was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week for scoring a game-winning goal and assisted on another tally while helping Harvard go 1-0-1 in its two matches the first week of October.

In the Crimson's 2-1 win at New Hampshire on Oct. 2, Mosbacher found the back of the net for the game-winner at 51:11, breaking a 1-1 tie. Earlier in the contest, Mosbacher was brought down in the UNH box, drawing a foul and creating a penalty kick opportunity for Harvard. Teammate Peyton Johnson scored on the penalty kick at 36:38, knotting the game at the time.

On Oct. 6, Mosbacher got Harvard on the scoreboard in an Ivy League contest against Cornell by assisting on a tally by Meg Casscells-Hamby at 2:14, giving the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Harvard went on to tie the Big Red, 1-1.
