Firefighters rescue woman from creek
Woman, 56, lifted from dry creek after 40-foot fall

Bookmark and Share
Firefighters from Palo Alto and Menlo Park worked together Wednesday evening, Oct. 3, to rescue a 56-year-old woman who had fallen 40 feet into a dry creek, according to Palo Alto Fire Battalion Chief Chris Woodard.

The Menlo Park Fire Protection District requested assistance from the Palo Alto Fire Department after receiving a call that a person had fallen into the dry creek between Stanford West and the Oak Creek Apartments at approximately 6 p.m., Woodard stated in a press release.

The woman had fallen from the Palo Alto side and was suffering from "bilateral wrist and right leg pain with a possible loss of consciousness," Woodard stated.

The woman was "packaged in full C-spine precautions" and lifted out of the creek using a "stokes basket," according to Woodard. She was then taken to Stanford University Hospital and was alert and responsive. The rescue effort lasted approximately 20 to 30 minutes, Woodard stated.

I am so pleased this woman was rescued in a timely manner and hope she recovers completely.

I am more interested in knowing how this happened. Was she somewhere she shouldn't be, was she intoxicated or impaired in some way? Is there a fence or something to prevent this sort of thing from occuring again?

Alan: Likely what you saw on Forest was part of the 19th Annual Peninsula Firefighters Burn Relay. The relay started at Moffett Field and is headed to San Francisco, with a stop at Palo Alto City Hall. Here's a link for more information about the relay: Web Link

Anyone know how the poor woman fell into the creek, or how long she was there before being seen or heard? She could have been there for hours, or days, even! She is SO lucky to have a happy ending.

Sometimes people just fall, but we all sure want it to be more interesting than that don't we ;)

Normally people do not walk anywhere close enough to the creek that they would be able to fall in even if they did trip. So the question is was this woman doing something other than just walking along the sidewalk? Was she so instance a homeless person who was taking cover in the bushes, or someone just admiring the creek?

There is likely some story here, it's hard to fall into the creek ... take a look sometime.

Great job by MPFD and PAFD

There is a lot of interesting wild life in the creek even during the dry period.

What was the woman doing there?
