The Gunn girls' golf team finished off the first half of its first-ever season in the Blossom Valley Athletic League in perfect fashion with a 208-403 thumping of visiting Wilcox on Monday.

The Titans improved to 5-0 in league (8-1 overall) while registering its best team score at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course.

Both junior Jayshree Sarathy and sophomore Anna Zhou carded season-best scores of 2-under 35 as each carded two birdies and seven pars. Lianna McFarlane also had her best round of the season while shooting a 43. Tiffany Yang (45) and Sandra Herchen (50) rounded out Gunn's scoring.

Gunn will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Santa Teresa at Palo Alto Muni to begin the second half of league play.

In Hillsborough, Menlo School improved to 3-2 in the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) with a 256-281 victory over Mercy-Burlingame at Crystal Springs Golf Course. Caroline Broderick had one birdie in a round of 41 to pace the Knights.

Cross country
The Menlo-Atherton boys dropped five spots but the M-A girls moved up two slots in this week's Central Coast Section Top 15 rankings.

The M-A boys finished 29th in Division I at the annual Stanford Invitational on Saturday, necessitating the move down. The M-A girls, however, finished sixth in the same division and made their move in the CCS rankings accordingly.

The Palo Alto girls remained at No. 9 while the Gunn girls made their first appearance, at No. 13.

Gunn and Paly were scheduled to run in the SCVAL Preview today at Crystal Springs in Belmont, but that meet has been pushed back to next week due to the excessive heat expected today.

Girls' tennis
Sacred Heart Prep opened another busy week of four matches with a 6-1 nonleague victory over visiting Mountain View on Monday. Caroline Nordman led the way in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph. The Gators (6-5) won two matches by default.

SHP will host Pinewood on Tuesday, Carlmont on Wednesday and Crystal Springs on Thursday -- playing a total of six straight home matches.

Hey how about those Gunn Girls Varsity Water Polo players? They are undefeated in SCVAL's and face Paly today at 3.45pm. Come on out and cheer for "the better team across town"!
