Stanford men move up in golf tournament

 | The Stanford's men's golf team bettered its previous day's performance by 12 strokes and is tied for seventh after the second round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.
The Cardinal is 21 shots behind Arkansas, which has an opened up a 12-stroke lead over second-place Auburn.
Defending champion Patrick Rodgers fired a 2-under 68, making two birdies and no bogeys in his best round of the young season. Rodgers, starting on the 10th hole, played the first 11 holes at even par before making birdie on No. 3 and 7 to pull within three strokes of leader Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas. Rodgers is at 2-under 70-68--138 with one round remaining.
Freshman David Boote finished with an even-par 70 and sits at 3-over, good for a share of ninth place. Andre DeDecker carded a second-round 74. DeDecker is tied with six golfers for 29th.
Steve Kearney bettered his opening 79 by six strokes. The senior is 12-over for the tournament and is tied for 54th. Shane Lebow shot a 78 to go with yesterday's 79. He is 17-over and tied for 68th.
Alumni events
The 2012 Stanford men's and women's swimming alumni meet will now begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The event at the Avery Aquatic Center's Belardi Pool is being held in conjunction with the university's Homecoming Weekend.
Warmups will begin at 7:30 a.m. The quadrathon will feature timed heats of the 50 free, 50 breast, 50 fly and 50 back.
The Stanford baseball program will play host to its "old-timers" and alumni games on Sunday in conjunction with the university's homecoming weekend.
Former players can choose to compete against each other in a head-to-head contest at noon or test their skills against the current Cardinal squad at 1:30 p.m. A picnic and BBQ will follow the latter contest.

Synchronized swimming
Stanford's Mariya Koroleva and duet partner Mary Killman have been named USA Synchronized Swimming's Athletes of the Year after finishing 11th at the London Olympics this summer.
The duo also won silver in their first competition together, the 2011 Pan American Games, and won gold at the Swiss Open in 2012.
Men's tennis
John Morrissey posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Chris Camillone of Texas on Monday afternoon, highlighting the first day of qualifying singles action at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Morrissey next will face David O'Leary of Memphis. O'Leary is the tournament's No. 21 seed.
Matt Kandath, Stanford's second entrant in the field, was defeated by Denver's Jens Vorkefeld, 6-0, 6-1, on Monday.
Kandath and Morrissey also will pair up in doubles. The duo earned a first-round bye and is scheduled to play its second-round match Tuesday.
