'What colleges want' to be discussed tonight
Co-author of book on college admissions will appear at Paly tonight, Gunn Tuesday

Bookmark and Share
"What Colleges Want and Why" is the theme of presentations at Palo Alto and Gunn high schools Monday, Oct. 1, and Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Writer Christine VanDeVelde will discuss finding the right college fit, the role of testing, the weight of extracurricular activities and the debate over taking tough courses or maintaining high grades.

Considerable time will be given to questions and answers, with members of the schools' guidance departments available to add perspective.

VanDeVelde is the co-author, with former Stanford University admission dean Robin Mamlet, of the 2011 book "College Admissions: From Application to Acceptance, Step by Step."

Monday night's presentation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in Haymarket Theatre at Paly. Tuesday's presentation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gunn's Spangenberg Theatre.

The events are sponsored by the Gunn and Paly PTSAs.

Are these talks open to the public, or do students have to be at Paly or Gunn?

SHORT NOTICE but thanks.

The author keeps saying the high school counselors do a fantastic job and you don't need any outside help. But it seems, you do need a book, her book, since none of the others are any good.

Here's the truth: you do need to read a book and learn about this topic on your own, because the college counseling staff at PAUSD is too overwhelmed to cover all of this material. Consider the college counselors to be a great resource for specific questions about PAUSD classes or graduation options, and do not expect more than that.
