Quarterbacks Jack Heneghan and Matt Bradley combined for 229 yards and four touchdowns to lead Menlo School to a commanding 40-0 nonleague football win over visiting Mills on Friday afternoon.

The Knights improved to 4-0 while the Vikings fell to 2-2-1. Menlo is now averaging 54.5 points per game and has outscored its opponents 218-52.

This is Menlo's best start since 2008, when the Knights won their first six games before suffering key injuries and losing their last five to finish a disappointing 6-5.

"I'm pleased with how we're doing and how focused we are so far," said Menlo coach Mark Newton. "The effort today was exceptional."

Mills started the game with a fumble recovery on the Menlo 26- yard line but failed to convert. Junior linebacker Travis Chambers intercepted a pass on the fourth play of the Vikings' drive, going 85 yards for the touchdown and putting the Knights up 7-0.

The Knights' defense was strong all game, allowing only 42 total yards in the first half. Menlo's Nick Schultz, Brock Burgess and Chambers each had an interception.

Heneghan, a junior, threw a quick two-yard pass to junior wide receiver Will King and put the Knights up 20-0 at halftime. Heneghan finished with two TD passes and 155 passing yards.

With 1:42 left in the third quarter, Bradley, a senior, ran for a nine-yard touchdown to put Menlo up 27-0 and dimming any chances of a comeback for Mills.

The Vikings had no answer for a solid Menlo defense as the offense totaled only 130 yards with five turnovers and five penalties.

With 7:02 left in regulation, Heneghan ran for a five-yard touchdown, capping off the victory.

"Nothing is going to be handed to us," said Heneghan. "We have to stay focused and keep improving like we have been."

The Knights are set to take on host Woodside next Friday in a PAL Ocean Division opener at 7 p.m.

Milpitas 24, Palo Alto 19
Trailing by 18 points heading into the fourth quarter, Palo Alto made a game of it before finally falling to visiting Milpitas in a SCVAL De Anza Division opener for both teams on Friday night.

Paly junior quarterback Keller Chryst threw five interceptions -- four in the first half, one of which was returned 28 yards for a Milpitas touchdown. The Vikings (0-1, 2-2) trailed by 17-6 at the half and 24-6 entering the final quarter before rallying and getting to within 24-19 with 8:47 left to play.

The Vikings committed turnovers on four consecutive possessions in the second quarter, which turned into 17 points for the Trojans (1-0, 3-1).

Chryst bounced back from his earlier miscues and completed 17 of 53 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns. He tossed a 31-yard score to Jayshawn Gates-Mouton in the second quarter, hit De;Antay Williams on a 16-yarder in the fourth and hooked up with Williams again on a 54-yarder that put the Vikings in position to possibly pull out the victory. Williams finished with six catches for 126 yards and two TDs.

Gunn 20, Lynbrook 12
Gunn opened up SCVAL El Camino Division play with a got-the-job-done win over visiting Lynbrook on Friday night as Andre Guzman connected on three touchdown passes.

After playing turnover free football the first four game, the Titans lost two fumbles -- the first coming on their first drive of the night and the second coming on their final offensive play that set up Lynbrook's final touchdown on the last play of the game.

"We need to play better," said Guzman. "I'm happy with the win but I didn't play my best and we need to step it up."

While Guzman might not have been as sharp as he has been in some of his previous games, his three touchdowns gives him 11 for the season with no interceptions.

The first quarter ended scoreless, but early in the second the Titans drove and scored when Guzman hit Sean Lydster on a 34- yard screen pass to give Gunn a 7-0 lead after Ben Sampson's extra point with 8:41 to go in the half.

A key break for Gunn came on their next possession when Sampson's 44- yard punt was fumbled by Lynbrook and Dontae Sweat recovered at Lynbrook's 31. On fourth-and-3 from the 28, Guzman rolled left and hit a wide open Wade Barry for the touchdown and Sampson's extra point put Gunn up 14-0 with 1:35 left.

On their first drive in the second half, Guzman and Barry connected again from four yards out with 5:49 left for the Titans final score of the game to make it 20-0.

The Titans (1-0, 3-2) will play next week at Harker at 7:30 p.m.
