| Freshman middle blocker Inky Ajanaku had 11 kills, a hitting percentage of .526 and a season-high seven blocks as the No. 6 Stanford women's volleyball team downed host Utah, 17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 27-25, in a Pac-12 Conference contest Friday night.
Jordan Burgess added 16 kills and 17 digs and Carly Wopat had 11 kills as the Cardinal (2-0, 10-2) won its eighth straight after a two-match losing streak. Madi Bugg recorded a season-best 54 assists and had 16 digs.
Stanford continues Pac-12 play on the road next week, visiting Arizona next Friday for a scheduled 7 p.m. first serve.
The Cardinal survived 11 ties and seven lead changes in the fourth set to come away with the tough win. The Utes actually outscored Stanford, 95-94, for the match.
Kyle Gilbert had 12 digs for the Cardinal.
Men's soccer
Stanford dropped a 2-1 nonconference contest, in overtime, to visiting Loyola Marymount on Friday.
Aaron Kovar scored a goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime. He kicked in a rebound that just snuck by the LMU goalkeeper.
"It's very frustrating because we are doing so much right. Yet, we are falling short in games where we should be doing better," Cardinal coach Jeremy Gunn said. "It is a difficult result and a similar situation to the Santa Clara game. We just have to put it behind us and move on."
Stanford moves into Pac-12 play next week, hosting conference favorite UCLA next Friday at 4 p.m.
Men's tennis
Daniel Ho was Stanford's lone winner on day one of the Napa Valley Tennis Center on Friday.
Ho beat Georgia's Garrett Brasseaux, 6-4, 7-6, in pool play, while Cals' Christoffer Konigsfeldt (Cal) downed John Morrissey, 6-4, 7-6(6); Illinois' Farris Gosea defeated Matt Kandath, 6-1, 6-4; and Georgia's Eric Diaz topped Robert Stineman, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.
Women's golf
Stanford is in a sixth-place tie following Friday's first round action at the Mason Rudolph Championships in Franklin, Tenn.
The Cardinal shot a team score of 302, eight strokes behind leader Texas. Lauren Kim shot an even-par 72, good for a fourth-place tie on the player leaderboard.
