Carly Wopat recorded 11 kills on a .526 hitting percentage in helping the Stanford women's volleyball team beat visiting USF, 25-18, 25-12, 25-16, on Friday night.

Wopat added five blocks as the seventh-ranked Cardinal (7-2) improved to 19-0 all-time against the Dons with its fifth straight win.

Junior Rachel Williams had seven kills in two sets for Stanford, which travels to St. Mary's for a nonconference match Saturday at 7 p.m.

Freshman setter Madi Bugg recorded 38 assists and had three service aces for Stanford, which hit .409 for the match, while holding USF to .103.

Women's soccer
Courtney Verloo's first goal in three years stood for No. 3 Stanford in its 1-0 victory over No. 15 San Diego State at the Santa Clara Classic on Friday.

Verloo, a redshirt junior, dipped a 25-yard free kick under the crossbar in the 30th minute and the defense, supported by goalkeeper Aly Gleason's five saves, held firm to earn the team's third consecutive shutout and hand the Aztecs (7-1) their first loss.

Stanford (5-1-1) welcomed the return of sophomore forward Chioma Ubogagu, playing in her first match for the Cardinal this season after representing the victorious U.S. team in Japan at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which concluded Saturday. Ubogagu, Stanford's leading returning scorer, started the match, but did not register a shot.

With San Diego State pressuring late in the match, Gleason produced a game-preserving save when she made a full extension dive to her left to stop a straight-on blast from Haley Locker.

Verloo, who nearly scored on free kick in the second half, had four goals as a freshman in 2009, but switched to defense a year later and missed last season with an injury. Back at forward, Verloo entered the match with a team-high five assists, but no goals in six starts.

Stanford resumes tournament play on Sunday in an 11 a.m. match against UNC Greensboro, also at Buck Shaw Stadium.
