The Oaks settle for a men's Cal Pac tie

Bookmark and Share
Menlo College scored twice within a minute late in the second half during the Oaks' 2-2 draw with visiting Marymount on Wednesday in a Cal Pac Conference men's soccer match.

"It was just a great game played by two great teams," Menlo coach Mike Keller said. "Our guys played excellent, and I know it might sound cliche but this early on in the season it's still a process and we are going to continue to build on matches like this."

Menlo (0-0-1, 2-0-2) plays next on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. when No. 17 Biola visits for a nonconference match.

After trailing at the half for the first time in 16 matches, Andrew Cota and Eric Angell each scored in the 81st minute to push the Oaks ahead, 2-1.

Marymount scored with 2:49 remaining to tie the match. The ball bounced off the crossbar and just crossed the line before squirting back onto the playing field.

Menlo was stifled on a number of scoring opportunities through much of the second half.

In the 57th minute, Cota crossed the ball perfectly to Sacred Heart Prep Alex Vukic, who headed the ball past the Mariners' goalkeeper Christos Voglis but off the crossbar. A follow shot from Giuseppe Frattaroli was rejected by the goalkeeper.

Six minutes later, Menlo was it again. A Cota corner found Vukic in the box, who then beat the goalkeeper but ran into a Marymount defender who was able to head the ball away from the net.

Angell found an open Cota who tied the score with a rocket past the goalkeeper. Angell also scored less than a minute later with a shot into the back of the net.

Menlo outshout Marymount, 17-8, including 14-5 in shots on goal. Oaks goalkeeper Alex Palomarez made three saves.

"It was a high pressure kind of game, but it's good to have a test like this early on," Angell said. "It was actually a lot of fun to play in, and who knows we might face Marymount at some point later in the year."

In related news, Menlo goalkeeper Alex Palomarez was named Cal Pac Conference Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the week.

In women's soccer news, Menlo College senior Erika Savela was named Cal Pac Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
