Stanford women win twice in own volleyball tournament

Stanford junior middle blocker Carly Wopat matched her season-high with 17 kills and the No. 8 Stanford women's volleyball team beat visiting Pacific, 25-16, 25-22, 25-17, Saturday in the Stanford Invitational at Maples Pavilion.

The Cardinal needed four sets to beat visiting Loyola-Chicago, 25-16, 25-27, 25-15, 25-15, Saturday morning. Hayley Spelman had 11 kills and recorded a hitting percentage of .450.

Wopat, named the tournament MVP, recorded a season-best .667 hitting percentage and was in on six blocks in the match against the Tigers, who lost their contest of the season.

Freshman outside hitter Jordan Burgess finished one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Boukather also had nine kills, while freshman Inky Ajanaku posted a season-best five blocks.

Stanford (6-2) outhit Pacific .276 to .097 in the match. Freshman setter Madi Bugg controlled the offense with 38 assists to go with 13 digs and three blocks. Sophomore libero Kyle Gilbert finished with 14 digs.

Bugg added 48 assists and 13 digs in the morning match while Gilbert recorded 20 digs against the Ramblers. Bugg and Gilbert were also named to the all-tournament team

Stanford plays host to San Francisco on Friday at 7 p.m. and travels to Saint Mary's on Saturday as part of the Pac-12/WCC Challenge.
