 | Kassidy Cook didn't make the 2012 U.S. Olympic diving team, but she's already got her sights on Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Leading up to that goal, Cook will finish high school in Texas before heading to Stanford University next year.
According to Swimming World Magazine, Cook has made her college choice and will join 2012 Olympic diver Kristian Ipsen and his coach, USA Olympic assistant Dr. Rick Schavone.
Schavone had two divers at the London Olympics, Ipsen in the three-meter synchro event and Cardinal grad Cassidy Krug in the women's 3-meter individual springboard.
Cook, a senior at The Woodlands High, is considered the top female high school diver in the nation. The National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) named her the 2010 high school girls national champion in its diving All-American program.
Cook finished fourth at the U.S. Olympic trials in the 3-meter springboard (only the top two advanced) and second in the three-meter synchro (only first place qualified for London).

Stanford freshman water polo player Maggie Steffens is a nominee for the Women's Sports Foundation's team Sportswoman of the Year award. The foundation will name the winner of the annual awards on October 17.
Steffens was the MVP of the women's water polo tournament at the Olympics, scoring 21 goals over the course of two weeks in London. Her contributions were a large part of helping Team USA win the gold medal in its fourth Olympic attempt. She also was also a vital part of the American victories at the 2011 Pan-American Games and the 2012 World League Super Final.
Other nominees for the team award include Stanford grad Kerri Walsh Jennings (with partner Misty May-Treanor) in beach volleyball.
Elsewhere, USA Swimming has announced its 2012-13 National Teams (Senior, Open Water, Junior). Members of this team are eligible to special benefits, including a National Team stipend to help each swimmer continue training.
The senior teams were chosen by the tabulation of the top 6 fastest times from Trials, the Olympics and the U.S. Open. Open water teams included the Olympians as well as the top five non-Olympic finishers at nationals.
The women's team included Stanford's Maya DiRado (200 IM, 400 IM) and Palo Alto High grad Jasmine Tosky (200 fly), while the men's team features PASA's Bernard Johnson (200 breast) and fellow Stanford grads Chad LaTourette (1500 free), Bobby Bollier (200 fly), Eugene Godsoe (100 back) and John Criste (100 breast).
Tosky (100 fly, 200 fly) also was named to the USA team that will compete at the World University Games next July in Kazan, Russia. Joining her will be recent Gunn grad Rachael Acker (400 free relay), Palo Alto's Liv Jensen (50 free), Adam Hinshaw of PASA (200 IM, 400 IM), and Johnson (200 breast).— Palo Alto Online Sports Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition?
