Palo Altan wins 16U junior beach volleyball title
|
Palo Alto native Kirsten Mead, 16, had herself a busy volleyball weekend, both indoors and out. After starting in five matches at setter for her Valley Christian high school team at Saturday's Spikefest I tournament in San Jose, Mead hopped the last flight to LAX in Southern California.
On Sunday, Mead and her partner, Jenna Belton of Aptos, won the California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) 16U Junior Tour Championship in Manhattan Beach.
Mead and Belton faced a field of the 10 winners of the CBVA Roxy Tour Stop tournaments held from Santa Cruz to San Diego during the summer. Mean and Belton qualified by winning the Santa Barbara tour stop on July 24. The duo won other tourneys during the summer, including the USA Junior Beach Tour National Championships in July in Milwaukee, Wis.
Mead, who is the CBVA 16U points leader for the 2012 season, joined with Belton to finish first in pool play at Manhattan Beach -- dropping one match to last year's CBVA champions but beating Zana Muno and Mary Hernandez 21-14. (Muno was featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd two weeks ago for her dominance in the SoCal AAU Beach volleyball scene).
Mead/Belton beat the excellent Arizona team of Sarah Sponcil/Madeleine Mertz, 28-17, in the semifinal match. In the championship match, Mean and Belton again faced Muno/Hernandez and came from behind to win, 31-29.
Football
Former Stanford running back Jeremy Stewart was signed by the Oakland Raiders to fill out their eight-player practice squad.
The Seattle Seahawks, meanwhile, signed former Stanford tight end Evan Moore.
Polo
Supporting disabled and severely injured Bay Area-based American combat soldiers who have returned from Afghanistan and Iraq, the third annual Wounded Warriors Polo Benefit (WWPB) will be held on Sunday from at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event is hosted by the Menlo Polo Club and sponsored by the Bay Area non-profit Commandery of St. Francis, Order of St. John, Knights Hospitaller. Proceeds fund physical rehabilitation, custom prostheses and specialized care needed to help these injured combat veterans re-enter and thrive in civilian life. Tickets for WWPB 2012 are available at www.woundedwarriorspolobenefit.org.
Swimming
A host of current and former Olympians will be on hand for the RCP Tiburon Sprint Classic II, a series of swim events in the Bay Area.

The Legends race brings together rivals of past, Olympic champion Matt Biondi, 47, and former world recordholder Tom Jager, 46, going head to head. Finally, the Main Event, a matchup of some of the fastest male sprint freestylers in the world, competing for a $10,000 first prize. The RCP Tiburon Sprint Classic II is an up-close-and-personal experience being held at a private home in Atherton, with live interviews before and after each heat culminating in a final duel of the fastest two men qualifiers.
