 | Palo Alto resident Stan Honey, winner of the 2006 Volvo Ocean Race, will be inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame along with eight others, at a special ceremony on Oct. 14 in New Orleans.
Honey earned the 2010 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year award for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe when the trimaran Groupama 3, with Honey as navigator, set the mark of 48 days, seven hours and 45 minutes (since surpassed).
In the Newport Bermuda Race, Honey served as navigator aboard Speedboat. After leading the 183-boat fleet for most of the 635 nautical-mile race, Speedboat was the first boat to cross the line after racing for 59 hours.
In addition to his sailing exploits, Honey, in 1998, co-founded Sportvision Inc. which evolved into the leading developer of live-tracking enhancements for sports TV broadcasts that includes the yellow first-down line for televised football.
Honey, who has a Masters in Science Electrical Engineering from Stanford, holds eight patents in navigational system design and 21 patents for TV special effects. He is a member of the board of directors of KVH (a manufacturer of satellite communications and navigation sensors).— Palo Alto Online Sports Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? Posted by Alan, a resident of the Midtown neighborhood, on Aug 16, 2012 at 11:52 am People should know that his wife, Sally Lindsay Honey , is also a famous sailor. She was the Rolex Yachtswomen of the year twice (72 & 73), owned a sewing/sail repair business in Palo Alto for years, and recently headed the committee that investigated the Farallones sailing tragedy and issued its report a short time ago.
