American women continue to rule beach volleyball

 | Stanford grad Kerri Walsh, along with teammate Misty May-Treanor, reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 London Olympic Games beach volleyball competition with a 21-13, 21-12 victory over The Netherlands' Marleen Van Ierse and Sanne Keizer at the Horse Guards Parade on Saturday.
The Americans, seeded first out their group, needed 30 minutes to complete the sweep. They scored 15 points on opponent errors.
Walsh and May-Treanor meets Italy's duo of Marta Menegatti and Greta Cicolari in Sunday's quarterfinal.
The two-time defending gold medalists have won 18 consecutive Olympic matches and are 36-1 in sets in their Olympic careers.
Women's diving
Stanford grad Cassidy Krug had a strong performance in the semifinals of the 3-meter springboard competition, finishing fifth and qualifying for the final.
Krug showed a big improvement from the qualifying round and will be a medal contender in the final. Krug scored 345.60 points, which was 25 points better than the first round. The 2007 grad, was nine points out of third place as she looks to climb on the podium in her first Olympics.
Krug will compete in the final on Sunday.
Men's water polo
The U.S. National Team suffered its first loss of the Olympics, dropping an 11-6 decision to Serbia in a preliminary round match Saturday.
Serbia scored the first three goals of the contest and never trailed. It was 5-3 at halftime.
Stanford grads Tony Azevedo and Peter Varellas each scored a goal for the Americans.
Serbia took over first place in Group B and clinched a spot into the quarterfinals. The U.S., already secured a spot in the quarterfinals, plays three-time defending champion Hungary in its last group game on Monday.
Track and field
Stanford grad Amaechi Morton, competing for Nigeria, was disqualified from Heat 3 of the Olympic men's 400 hurdles semifinals on Saturday.
All three Americans -- Kerron Clement, Angelo Taylor, Michael Tinsley -- qualified for Monday's final.
In the women's pole vault, Stanford grad Katerina Stefanidi, competing for Greece, did not qualify for the finals, finishing 14th overall. She had a best of 13-11 1/3.
American Jennifer Suhr tied for the top qualifying mark with Cuba's Yarisley Silva, each reaching 14-11 1/4.
