Palo Alto police arrested a man Wednesday night after he allegedly broke into JJ&F Market at 520 College Ave. through a rooftop skylight.

"The skylight glass was broken and set aside so that the suspect could rappel into the store using black satellite dish cable," police stated in a press release.

Police responded to an alarm at the market at 11:20 p.m. and found 31-year-old Gustavo Alvarez of Palo Alto hiding behind a tree in the back of the building. Police do not believe anything was stolen during the break-in.

"Once inside the store, the alarm sounded, causing the suspect to flee out of a rear door and over a barbed wire fence, where he was detained by an arriving sergeant," police stated.

Alvarez was arrested for burglary and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose.

Police are reminding residents to report suspicious behavior via the department's 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413. Anonymous tips can be emailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or by text or voicemail at 650-383-8984.

Good to see that the response time was quick enough to allow the police to arrive before the man was able to escape. This seems to be one of the first robberies that was perpetrated by a Palo Alto resident.

You've got to give the guy points for creativity. I love that he used RG6 coax as a rope - only in Palo Alto!
