Skov rejoins football team, will sit out opener
|
The Stanford football team will have senior linebacker Shayne Skov back for the 2012 season, minus one game, after Cardinal head coach David Shaw announced on Friday that Skov has been fully reinstated to the football program.
"Part of Shayne's reinstatement is that he will be suspended for the first game of the season against San Jose State on August 31," said Shaw.
Skov will return to the team for Week 2 against Duke and, more important, a Week 3 showdown with USC.
The Stanford Daily first reported that Skov was booked for driving under the influence at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, according to a report by the Stanford University Department of Public Safety (SUDPS).
In the wake of that arrest, Shaw said at the time that Skov "will be responsible to adhere to any legal responsibilities regarding this event along with ramifications which will be determined by the program."
Skov later was suspended from the team.
Skov led the Cardinal with 84 tackles and collected 7.5 sacks in a breakout sophomore season in 2011, and earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 honors. But, he only appeared in three games his junior season, tearing his ACL against Arizona. He had 19 tackles and two sacks in those 2 ½ games before being injured.
"His rehab is going very well and he is close to being at 100 percent," said Shaw.
Gymnastics
Stanford freshman gymnast Kristina Vaculik earned a spot on Canada's Olympic team after winning the Canadian Olympic Trials in the uneven bars and finishing second in the beam and all-around program over the last three days in Gatineau, Ontario.
Vaculik opened up the Trials on Tuesday with a win in the bars, edging fellow Olympian Brittany Rogers 14.4 to 14.3. In the all-around, Vaculik scored a 55.9 for second and also had a tally of 13.9 in the beam. The Cardinal freshman was also third in the floor exercise (13.7) and seventh in the vault (13.9).
Last month, the 19-year old won the Canadian all-around, as well as the uneven bars and balance beam at the Canadian National Championships.
Vaculik took the 2012 season off to prepare for the Olympics. She competed for the Cardinal as a freshman in 2011.
Sailing
John Vandemoer and Stanford Sailing, following four individual All-Americans and two top-eight national finishes in 2012, welcomes in six incoming freshmen to its Class of 2017.
Two San Francisco natives from The Branson School, highlight the class in Sami Steele and Antoine Screve. The class also includes skipper Axel Sly (Weston, FL/Cypress Bay HS) and crew Yuki Yoshiyasu (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS), Noelle Herring (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Bishop's School) and Michelle Catania (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic HS). The group has participated in multiple high school championships, Youth National Championships, Club 420's and been a part of the youth development circuit.
"This is a really talented class," said Vandemoer, who will enter his fifth season in the fall. "We will have four All-Americans back, after only graduating one senior and we are in a great state. Add the incredible freshman class from last year and add this class, and it's the most depth we've had, especially on the coed and women's side."
