Local golfer advances in junior girls' state competition

 | Menlo-Atherton student Xin Fang of Menlo Park reached the semifinals in the championship flight of the California Junior Girls State Championships with a pair of victories on Wednesday at the Dunes Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach.
Fang advanced with a 4-and-2 victory over Paige Lee of Folsom in the Round of 16 and added a 3-and-2 win over Jessica Luo of San Jose in the quarterfinals.
Fang will face Kathleen Scavo of of Benicia in the semifinals on Thursday, needing a victory to reach the finals in the afternoon.
Jayshree Sarathy and Anna Zhou, both of Palo Alto, failed to advance past the Round of 16. Sarathy dropped a 2-and-1 decision to Katherine Sborov of Pleasanton while Zhou fell to to Luo, 2 and 1.
In the Round of 32 on Tuesday:
Fang defeated Jacqueleine Ngo-Friant, 8 and 6. Zhou advanced with a 4-and-2 victory over Christine Kim of San Jose and Sarathy moved on with a 5-and-3 win over Yoon-hee Kim of San Ramon.
Chloe Sales, who'll be a sophomore at Castilleja this fall, lost to Melissa Hosman of Castro Valley, 1 up. Michelle Xie, from Paly, dropped a 3-and-2 decision to Sborov.
Lauren Kim of Los Altos reached the semifinals with a 2-and-1 win over Sborov and a 7-and-5 triumph over Chloe Corriveau of Pebble Beach.
Men's golf
Robert Salomon of Portola Valley was knocked out of the 101st California Amateur Championships at La Cumbre Country Club in the opening round of match play on Wednesday.
Salomon, who qualified in stroke play with rounds of 72 and 68 for a 2-under 140, fell to Ben Lein of Diamond Bar, 1 up.
Failing to advance to match play was Sacred Heart Prep grad Dalan Refioglu (75-69-144), Atherton's Jonathan Garrick (73-71-144), Maverick McNealy of Portola Valley (70-74-144), Spencer Fletcher of Los Altos (74-71-144), and Patrick Grimes of Palo Alto (76-75-151).
