A man who was fatally struck by a car while standing near a bus stop in Mountain View Thursday morning, June 21, has been identified as 50-year-old William Ware, police said Friday.

Ware, a Mountain View resident, was standing by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority bus stop near the intersection of California Street and Escuela Avenue at about 9:30 a.m. when the car struck him, according to police.

Ware was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the car, a 21-year-old Mountain View man, was taken to a hospital. It does not appear that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and he has cooperated with investigators, police said.

The property manager of a nearby apartment complex said she believed the victim often waited at the bus stop for VTA's No. 35 bus. Renee Contreras, property manager of the Maplewood Apartments at 1885 California St., said she heard the crash and came out to see a navy-blue Audi wrapped around a tree. Contreras said the car had also struck two other trees and a water line at the apartment building.

The trees that the car hit are at least 50 feet away from the street, right?

I went to the intersection in Google Maps, and there's a guy at that bus stop. I'm guessing it's William Ware.

Dan, if you mean the guy dozing at the bus-stop with the big eucalyptus tree behind him --- no idea if that's him or not, but it's not the bus-stop where the accident occurred. The one in your link is the northbound side of Calif; accident occurred on the southbound side.
