Gunn High sophomore golfer Jayshree Sarathy finished runner-up in the San Francisco Women's Championships on Sunday at Harding Park, dropping a 36-hold match-play final to Alexandra Wong of St. Ignatius.

The tournament, which is open to all amateurs, came down to a pair of high school students after Sarathy eliminated three-time California Amateur champion Lynne Cowan in the quarterfinals and Clovis East High senior Hannah Sodersten in the semifinals.

Gunn freshman Anna Zhou also competed and was the medalist in qualifying, shooting a 73. She was eliminated by Cowan in the Round of 16, preventing a matchup of teammates in the quarterfinals.

Gunn High grad Martin Trainer won the men's division of this tournament during his sophomore year. He's currently playing for USC and was the Pac-10 Tournament champ last spring.

Both Sarathy and Zhou play on the Gunn boys' golf team, which is off to a 2-0 start.

Basketball
Priory graduate Reggie Willhite, a senior at Yale, was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Ivy League last week. Willhite led the league with a single-season school record of 63 steals and was named to the All-Ivy League second team.

Willhite is Yale's first Defensive Player of the Year. The award was instituted at the start of the 2008-09 season.

Willhite has been one of the most versatile players in the Ivy League. In addition to his outstanding defense, he is in the top-10 in the league in four offensive categories field goal percentage (fifth, .478), assists (sixth, 4.0 per game), scoring (seventh, 12.2 ppg.) and assist/turnover ratio (eighth, 1.4).

Willhite's 63 steals broke the school record Alex Zampier set in 2009-10. His 130 career steals are tied for the seventh most in Yale history.

In 14 Ivy games, Willhite averaged 11.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and had 30 steals. The Bulldogs finished the regular season 19-9 overall and 9-5 in Ivy play.
