I am curious why they chose this spot instead of say the old Lagunita Lake bed which has been dry for years - the work could have been done without interupting anything, the cost would have been much lower and the resevoir could have been bigger,

Looking at the site plan document on the city's website, there is an existing reservoir there, so it's not as if this is odd choice. The article fails to mention this.

John: Um, The annual bonfires at Lake Lagunita were stopped because of an endangered salamander living there . . . I don't suppose putting in a underground or otherwise reservoir there would be less disruptive than a bonfire?
