Jeanne Kennedy: The Hospitality of Strangers
|

 | We were returning home from Prague and were halfway across the Atlantic. The pilot announced that the skies over the United States were closed and that we had to turn back. We were stunned and tried to think how and why that could happen. The reality was far worse than anything we could imagine.
We landed with 10,000 others in De Gaulle Airport and were taken in by a wonderful French couple whose son had been diverted to Newfoundland. They wanted to help someone in the way that they hoped their son would be helped. It was desperately difficult to be exiled and unable to be with others in our country to mourn together.
